January 2021 weather observations for the PNW

Recommended Posts

The problem with these late winter surges of cold/snowy weather is by the time the cold and snow arrives my mind has already switched gears and started looking towards spring and summer. So when it arrives I'm pretty meh about it.

I really wish November, December, and January could deliver the goods but I guess I would have to relocate to get that.....that isn't going to happen. I love it here too much. I'll deal with it.

Onward!

I feel the same way... but probably in the minority on here.

That front next weekend continues to look pretty fun.

Probably the best potential for a major snow event here so far this winter.

Really impressed with the snow event out in Central Oregon today. That should help them achieve some decent lows next week.

Alright, who messed with the 18z GFS snow maps?

It must be mad at us for always talking sh*t. 2nd 18z run in a row to show less totals than the 12z run.

Maybe it's not feeling good? COVID?

It's better for higher elevations though. Incredible amounts in the Cascades and even Coast Range.

Even at 1600' it could go either way, at face value a lot of potential for quite a bit of wet snow, but just minor changes would leave us with just cold rain.

18z actually gives Washington some Arctic air in the fantasy range. Subfreezing highs Chehalis north, even for just one day. Wouldn't take much tinkering to give more arctic air to the south. Could also just not exist on the next run. And then pop back into existence.

Haven't been following the models that closely the last few days, but it seems like maybe the GEFS is getting better?  Certainly the 18Z is, not sure about the other recent runs.  Of course the latest map will have a stronger signal than the one at the bottom since that hour is closer now than it was days ago, but the placement of ridges and troughs is better.

Was at our Lake Goodwin lake house earlier and the north wind was whipping! White caps and all...And my ears got cold! Brisk!!

Completely calm here all day... makes a big difference in how warm it feels when the sun is shining.

It was a chilly walk along the Ruston Point area but water is gorgeous today along with moon being out!

I’ve been here a few times along with the zoo nearby. It’s quite spectacular.

Annie C. on Foxy 12 just said no dice below 1000' Sunday morning.  Sorry to most of you, Andrew should get a few inches I would think though.

I’m with Mr.SnowMizer on this one.  In a pattern like this surprises happen and it all works out.  Funny note, when I watched the ferry dock this one guy kept getting on board then off again 😱

Yeah. The N wind was about 9-10mph here today and even with the temps being in the mid 40s, the windchill was in the 30s.

Still have the same wind, 42, with windchill/feels like 36.

Actually feels pretty wintry out there. Hit 42 today. Now down to 38 with a chilly northerly breeze. I could see mid/upper 20s tonight.

They have done and outstanding job on this renovation!  Everyone can enjoy....no private signs and businesses hogging the waterfront!
love it here.  I now bring my bike once a week to do the Point Defiance loop.   Awesome local getaway 😃

I see that too. That was unexpected. Kind of like the 6” of snow I got today. With snowcover should easily be my lowest temp since early December where it was 11. Could be close tho if there’s enough clearing.
