Today is the 17 year anniversary of me becoming a weather weenie. 8" of snow in Seattle which blew my 12 year old mind after such a relatively snowless early childhood.

What are your memories from January 6th, 2004?

My best memories are from January 5, 2004. We had a couple inches of snow in the morning and then snow began late evening. 24/19 day. Snow fell pretty heavily between midnight and 8am on the 6th before turning to heavy ZR, by the end of the day on the 7th we had over 1” of ice accumulation and a lot of cleanup to do! Temps nudged above freezing by noon on the 8th.

Flurries the day before send us home on our first day at school since Christmas break. Then I woke up that next morning with 5” of snow on the ground. I think it snowed close to 15” the next day or two.  Then came a bunch of zr on top but we stayed below freezing for awhile. Despite the news saying every day it was gonna warm up. And watching a reporter being blown around in Troutdale with blowing snow and sub 25 degree weather

That weak low in the GOA is the fly in the ointment, retrograde that, or cut it off a little further south and west, then we are in biznaz.

It's been years since I've seen the WA cascade snowpack this healthy. Everything over 120%. Olympics close to 150%.

Lower Snake pack needs a bit of work at 97% and the east side of the mountains only ~110%.

Would be good to have a cool spring, followed up by an average-to-cool summer...might be able to keep some of the pack over 5000' feet into September if lucky.

Edit: Might as well point out here that Mt. Baker probably added another 20" or so tonight...Stevens Pass likely will end up having added 17-20" by the time the sun comes up. Very healthy mountain passes up here.

A long ways to go, but probably the best potential of any GFS run yet.

The smaller details are not great on the 12z GFS, but it seems like it is getting there.

I was living in the Goose Hollow/Kings Hill neighborhood of Portland, right at the base of the West Hills. The hills were both lofting the cold outflow from the gorge high enough into the atmosphere that I got sleet while most of the rest of the metro area was getting freezing rain, and locally enhancing precipitation. End result is I got an insane amount of sleet, something like 4" total, on top of 6" of snow, and only a trace of glaze.

It's called clown range for a reason.

That is nuts. We didn't have as much sleet with that event down in Marion County, it switched from snow to ZR pretty quick. The one we had a ton of sleet with was 12/20/2008. That was actually probably the wildest variation of weather I have experienced living in the Willamette Valley, we went from rain, to heavy snow, to sleet, to ZR, over the course of about 18 hours.

Oregon Cascades are below average.

They are in the 85-90% range with what will probably be a pretty stellar back half of the season on the way. Could be much worse.

Eastern Oregon is looking even better.

Our infant son at the time was sick, probably the result of that classic new parent mistake of having a six month old go out and do naked snow angels on New Year’s Day.  Lesson learned!!!

I also remember getting an impressive amount of sleet with that storm, likely the result not of a deeper cold layer but the sheer intensity of the low level cold itself.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.
