It snowed about a foot in Madrid yesterday. Biggest snowstorm in 50 years.

That's impressive.  Blocky winters have a tendency to get everyone eventually.  Once again we have to remember the base state favors our region over anywhere anomalously speaking.  I still think this winter will deliver the goods.

Death To Warm Anomalies!

Winter 2023-24 stats

Total Snowfall = 1.0"

Day with 1" or more snow depth = 1

Total Hail = 0.0

Total Ice = 0.2

Coldest Low = 13

Lows 32 or below = 45

Highs 32 or below = 3

Lows 20 or below = 3

Madrid has a low of 10°F forecast on Monday. That is going to smash records, I’m pretty sure.

That has to be epic for them.  That crazy NAO block is finally delivering for some.

Wow.  According to Wiki the coldest Madrid got between 1981 to 2010 is 18 so 10 would be crazy.

Seems to have come from a strengthening subtropical low clashing with modified Arctic air. Central Spain was in the sweet spot. Places to the south of there had very heavy rain and flooding.

Hopefully by next weekend the seahawks have advanced to the divisional round and we will start seeing snow and cold on the mid range/long range model runs.

Kind of chilly today, fog broke up but then the clouds came immediately after. 41 here currently. Should end up being our coldest day in 2 weeks.

That trough around day 9/10 is pretty nice. Not cold enough to bring accumulating snow down to the lowlands, but close.

Don't we want the Greenland block to dissipate or do we want it?

I want it weaker. Hard to have two strong anamalous blocks going simultaneously so that would reduce the likelihood of our AK block building well and delivering real cold air South.

Yeah, but I don’t think the Greenland block being strong is a bad thing in and of itself. It’s somewhat common for energy to move from one block to another when the overall regime is blocky.

Hard to imagine full scale GOA/AK blocking taking shape with an anomaly like that so relatively close by.

January 1969 begs to differ.  I always thought NAO blocks were bad for us until I really started looking into it.  It's not rare for the PNA and NAO blocks to bridge with each other.

That's actually more of a Bering Sea low.  Those are way better for us than a low south of the Aleutians.

Ensemble looking better. Colder anomalies further to the west and closer to us. A ridge-bridge could pull off something crazy.

Funny how anytime the models show troghing in the West Eastern mets say it's wrong.  In actuality it's normal for a Western trough after a major SSW.  When you couple that with the base state it's pretty likely.

Looking a lot cooler mid-week. Even showing some chilly Fraser River outflow now on Thursday around the border.

Let's hope this is finally the point where the models will really buy off on this and even move up the timing.  I've noticed that when these things finally happen they usually happen faster in the home stretch.
