The Ensembles are about ten times as important as the Operational at this range (12-16 days) and they look about as rock solid as you'll ever see on both the GFS and Euro. I'm almost never confident in anything past 10 days, but the signal for Pacific Blocking near the sweet spot for us and significant cold in Western Canada is as strong as it gets. Really fantastic potential for the last week of January.

I’m going to wager that the 18z was a sort of warm outlier. Just a hunch because of the way the ensembles have all been as of late. 18z wasn’t terrible neither.

It's actually a lot more snow here. But we will get plenty in late February and March, I want to see the lowlands SCORE.

Cancelling or uncancelling winter over the long range of an operational GFS return is an exercise in madness. Look at the trends in the ensemble runs for any valuable information. Regardless there are a lot of pieces and parts to this upcoming pattern change and the depicted solutions are in flux. I won't be confident in anything until it's within 144 hours, and even then the fine details are just impossible to get down at that hour.

Yep... Need that ridge to explode into AK. Think of the southward progression of any Arctic front as a function of the northward progression of its associated block. If the block is just kissing Anchorage, then it might get hung up at customs in Blaine. If it's sucker-punching Prudhoe Bay, then the hills of San Fran will be capped with white five days later.

Wasn’t a bad run. At this range what really matters is all the ensembles agreeing. Op runs are going to vary quite a bit...but most of us already know this. Overall the pattern is still there nothing has changed drastically.

Latest GEFS for hour 192 is sort of a trend breaker, but the overall pattern change isn't affected. The signal seems a bit muddled as well, a sign of some new uncertainty being introduced. Could be some bad data over the pacific.

Or it could be the start of a trend towards parking the ridge right over us and we roast with 60+ degree weather until we drop into the freezer in April. My hope is diminishing with each frame being released.

Could also be a timing thing too.  Sometimes comparing the same hour on different runs can be misleading because of this.

This looks fine if you ask me. A strong ridge in the GOA that builds over Alaska and a west-based negative NAO. 500mb streamlines parallel to the coast means that Arctic air in Canada can filter down and systems will track meridionally along the Pacific coast and possibly coming onshore in Oregon.

Lowland snow is harmful to our sensitive maritime-equipped ecology and spreads dangerous narratives regarding climate change. To imply that our future could be snowy is in a way climate denial, and as such we should stop talking about snowfall and dissolve the forum, perhaps regrouping on Twitter. I already have a zoom meeting set up to discuss this at 11:00am on the 22nd this month.

Let's join the rest of our normal, functioning society that views snow as an unwelcome nuscience preventing us from travelling, working, and being productive in our lives.

Alright, for reals though... Still 100% a-go for colder and possibly snowy weather for the last week of January. It's going to take more than 1 OP run or bad ensemble frame to knock me off that horse. Way too much time and energy tracking this thing since the end of December to give up that easily.

I'll continue to take variations in OP runs with a grain salt and keep my eyes peeled on the ensemble means for clues to pattern progression. At least until we get a bit closer to the event. (Should we call it an event yet? Might be jinxing it.)

Good thing you posted this cause I was about to smack you! 😀

I think the ingredients are in place for an epic end of January and February. Let's sit back, enjoy it and see what happens.
