Confluence of the Spokane & Columbia frozen over......apparently first time since 1996 according to the locals. These less than stellar pics were snapped w/ cell phone while drive across the two rivers marina bridge.

Don't have too much to add so far. Video of some nor'easter winds a few weeks ago. Peak gust was 62mph.

Here's some photos of some more action this past week.  This one is of the LTI snowplow (our milk hauler, they own their own snowplows!) and one of the local custom hire farmers who was out this week clearing the way for trucks, sheriffs, PSE, etc. Basically without the farmers emergency services wouldn't get through up here.  I spent a lot of time clearing about 3 miles of road in my area and pulling out vehicles as well.  The only roads that were open were the state highways and in the city.   Otherwise Whatcom county was shutdown from Smith Rd north for a week.

Snow squalls moved through here two days ago behind a departing cyclone. Took this (low quality) video at the Rockville MC campus before a think-tank seminar.

Accumulated about 1/2" in 5mins, all sublimated 5mins later.

Ah, forgot to mention that today's high was 72F, only two days after the snow squalls and single-digit wind chills. Classic late winter/early spring in the DC area. #whiplash

Awesome pictures!

I wish we had conic evergreens like that. Something about those trees in the snow is just so magical.

It really is amazing around here in the winter when it snows. The primary reason I enjoy being in a wind sheltered area too. You don't get these scenes out in the county in places like Lynden, Sumas, Ferndale etc where the snow just gets blasted around.

What a difference a year makes. Last February was bone dry and actually hot like Texas has been lately. I understand it hit 107F in south Texas yesterday!

AND the Mt. cedar pollen is off the charts too. I've had a sinus headache for 6 weeks.

Nothing touches it.

The plants here are totally confused as well.

Not from my camera, but it's the world's northernmost settlement with more than 1000 people - Longyearbyen, Norway (78.22 N, 15.55 E).

They started off March with a nice sunny day, but the sun is below the horizon from October 26 to February 14 during the winter, and for the first of March, the elevation at solar noon is only 4.63. Due to hills, sunlight is not seen in the actual town until about March 8, but they do get a nice view of sunlit hills across the water before then.

By late April, they begin their 4 month period of midnight sun. Not a place I'd like to live, as pretty as it is.

My 12 year old daughter Shaylee on the summit of Peak 12,029 on February 25. When the photo was taken it was sunny, but the windchill was -55F! (On the old windchill chart it was -82F!).

On day 1, we all snowshoed through a blizzard 6.5 miles to a mountain hut on Boreas Pass. In the morning it was clear, but very cold and very windy. Kimberly and Kessler stayed down at the pass, but Shaylee decided to tough it out and climb the peak. We were going to climb another one, but conditions were pretty brutal at high elevations.

So, time for spring stuff?

Around these parts, spring begins when the old tulip poplars give their stamp of approval. So, by that measure, spring has officially sprung:

Snow totals nationwide

Love that blob of 15ft right over Snowshoe. I'm 90% certain that I'm buying a small place up there this summer, if I can afford it.

This is the approach of a nasty supercell that occurred back in April of 2015. Ended up causing significant tree damage.

Explosive leaf-out ongoing, as temps approached 90*F,

Nice thunderstorm rolled through around 530pm.

Was there any tornadic activity?  I've witnessed some pretty strong thunderstorms but never a supercell.

The storm did produce a tornado, but not until after it passed my location since it was still maturing upon arrival.

The hail core and microburst smacked us good though. Hail was grape-sized, and I recorded a wind gust to 62mph through the trees (so it was probably stronger in reality). Downed a bunch of limbs and messed up my neighbor's siding and awning.

Sounds like a fun experience. Can grape-size hail damage car surfaces?

Usually not, but when it's wind blasted it can do mild damage to siding and trees, at least based on what I've seen. Also seems like the physical nature of the hailstones matters, as I've noticed that the spiky hailstones are usually lighter, while the solid/round ones are heavier and don't shatter as easily.

In June of 2010, a stronger storm dropped lacrosse ball sized hail, in solid/round form, and it did moderate damage to cars, trees, and roofing.
