Potential Winterstorm 1/30-2/1

So the GFS call of 0” IMBy on yesterday’s 12z run proved to be way wrong. And the 1-2” it showed for most of the week proved to be way wrong. But the Euro showing the snow extending into central and western Iowa was also way wrong. So in the end no model appeared to do great. It was a tricky storm for sure.

Thx. Prolly 1.5 for mby again. At least it had a tiny base to build on.

Congrats! I’ve heard of Janesville quite a bit. It’s not that far from eastern Iowa.

Thanks! It's the first job I've had contact me in any context other than "everything about you sucks, piss off", so... Kinda have my hopes up? I just wanna leave my current terrible job lol

About 9 inches with a light snow falling. The radar keeps filling in with the help of the lake. I think I'll be able to get into double digits when its all said and done

It’s been snowing here non-stop since 6:00pm last night. I’m surprised how much LES is picking up on radar.  I’m going to go out and take another measurement.  Gotta be between 8-9” easily by now.

Radar is really starting to fill back in with the help of the lake. Should be rocking most of the afternoon

While verifying the 9.7” family got, they sent a pic of about 8.5” on the driveway. While still very impressive; that seems more reasonable to me and I think I’m gonna go with that instead.

MKE area is showing solid 8-13" reports...I believe it, those bands off the lake looked like it was puking snow earlier this morning.

I think I hit close to 10” - it’s still snowing - not heavily, but it slowly adds up. I haven’t seen the snow this high in years. Roads are still messy - running out of places to go with it.

This has been a great storm and I’m thrilled to see the models nailed the LES set up.  The lake has been our friend this go-around.  In fact, it’s coming down hard right now over here and the wind has become notably gusty!  What a wonderful weekend of storm tracking.

Took a look at our WSW before it expires at 6PM... looks like they snuck in total accumulations of 8-12 to match what has actually fallen. Yesterday it was suggested 5-9 inches.

Nonetheless, I think LOT did a great job forecasting this storm. It’s tough forecasting when their is a mix involved and they just about nailed it.

My brother lives right on the border of Hiawatha in Cedar Rapids and he said about 5-6”. Another brother lives in Marion he said 4”. And my twin brother lives on the far south side of CR and he also said 4”.

First time I heard you are a twin. Also nice that you’re brothers measure snowfall. I’m the only wx fan in our family. JFYI, I have 4 brothers and 4 sisters and only 3 live in other states.

I’m throwing out a guess but we were easily one of the hardest hit here just north of the city, I’d say with the total of 9.5” early this morning we’re definitely somewhere around 12”. Such an awesome storm! Here’s another couple pics from my neighborhood 🖤

Was in the deep south unexpectedly during this storm flying out of KFNT. Came home this evening and for the first time this entire season the snow was actually getting deeper as I got closer to home. Nothing like y'all west or south or north of me but I was really surprised by it.

Finally, on the last day of January we got our first plowed snow storm. Wasn't here to take measurements as it fell but my driveway had a solid 3" and there's 4+ on my lower deck out back (tho that may have benefited from some blowing off the house roof). I was like a kid at Christmas using my shovel to clear everything. I am 99% certain I've never had to wait this long into a winter to put a shovel to snow with the one possible exception being the great Nino of 82-83. Glad for all the "winning" this week across our Sub and hoping for more to come.

Im glad this storm worked out for ya in some way, even though it was not a lot, at least you got to see some appreciable piles and plows around your neck of the woods. FWIW: You did better than my area. I picked up 2.7" and maybe another inch or 2 tomorrow to top it off, so storm total looking like a 3-4inch or so.

Btw: Hope you had a fun trip!

Awesome!  I'm happy to hear that you scored some decent snow out of this system.  It makes sense based off of the radar images I was seeing early yesterday morning.  Isn't nice to see mother nature throw you a bone?  Hopefully that is a sign we are breaking recent season trends and setting new ones as the 2nd half of this delayed season is underway.

As @brianc400 posted above, there are many reports coming in of 12"+ totals and they reached far and wide across the local viewing area.  Last night, I was watching the local news at the mets were saying ORD had 9.9" as the final tally.  I didn't believe it as there was no way they were that low.  If it were to be, gosh...can you just add a 0.1" to it and make it double digits???  J/K...so, when I looked at the official data that was recorded last night they upped the daily tota yesterday that made it officially the seasons first double digit storm (10.8")!
