December 2014 Observations for the Pacific Northwest

It's not often the skies clear after snow on the west side.

This image from yesterday clearly shows the snow on the NE side of the Olympics, near Vancouver BC, and the convergence zone near Seattle.  There was a dry slot between Bellingham and Seattle that I would be pissed to live in :)

Small area of clouds helped earlier in the day here... but now its melting snow even though the sun is going down.    Can't get any radiational cooling here now.    There is no benefit to the shaded areas.

My son thinks it is!   His snow fort was solid as rock yesterday... this afternoon its all mushy.    The horrors of alto-stratus continue!

Topped off at 32F today. I don't get much sun here after about 1pm so there is still a lot of snow-cover.

Looks pretty much like my yard still!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Not a bad run, it was a great Thanksgiving day which was mostly dry, but warm gusty south winds. I love days like that. Then the Seahawks won. Then the rain turned to snow around 11pm on Friday night, woke up to 2" of snow on the ground Saturday morning with a temp that fell from 31 degrees at 7am to 21 degrees by 7pm. Had a low of 17 on Sunday morning, and the same this morning. Still only 30 at my house, haven't been above freezing since Friday evening. Most of my snow is still on the ground and in the trees, I like it!!!

Only 30 out here today. 37 at PDX. Coldest highs of the season thus far for both locations.

Now it's clearing just in time for sunset. Should be another chilly night.

Great pattern for maintaining cold low level temps in the Gorge for most of this week. It will be interesting to see what happens when the next batch of precip moves in.

Global warning.  I remember as a kid when my snow forts would last until March in the Willamette Valley.  Sucks now.

Obviously this won't verify. It would be something on par with January 1875. Yes that is the 498 thickness line down there around Eugene. Looks like about 490 at Seattle....Yeah, but we can dream.

Another live view... the trees on the ridge were blown clear of snow yesterday.    It was cool to watch with big puffs of snow just blowing up all day.

That would be awesome. Found this historical account concerning January 1875:

On January 5, 1875, the weather in Puget Sound turns cold under a north wind and the cold persists for weeks. The temperature drops to three degrees F the next day in Tacoma and to minus two degrees in Olympia. Wallula on the Columbia River reports minus 26 degrees. As creeks and rivers freeze, sawmills close and steamers cannot dock. The lower Columbia River freezes and Portland is cut off by sea. After portions of the Duwamish River freeze, the river breaks up and cakes of ice float into Elliott Bay. Wind blows the ice into Seattle's wharves forcing a maritime shutdown of the Seattle waterfront.

Maybe future runs will bump things north just a bit. Then again, it'd be nice to have some consistency.

Think we are past the point of model changes... I am sure its basically locked in now. Maybe the next round in February will work out better.

I suspect we flip to a -NAO in late December..that'll be the first sign that things are on track. Might be coupled with a -EPO..

I THINK 1862 AND 1893 WERE PROBABLY MORE EXTREME AIR MASSES THAN 1875.  1893 may not have been as extreme in Oregon though.  Sorry about the all caps.

Winter 2023-24 stats

You take the time to write out "sorry about the all caps" instead of taking one more second to just fix it.

Wow, that kind of cold would kill a lot of subtropical plants in the SF Bay Area. And probably all the palm trees in Portland. :P

Any palm trees in Stevenson? I'm guessing you wouldn't have moved there if there were.

Maybe we'll get lucky and get to witness the onset of the next ice age destroy every palm tree in North America.

Palms even struggle where I live due to the periodic cold / dry east wind.  I have two neighbors that tried to grow palms but lost them.  Oh darn...

About half of the ground is still covered with snow in my neighborhood.  Current temp 28 after a high of 36.  I could grow to like this just fine.

I think the ones in Mexico and Florida will probably always be safe.

No palms out here. Washougal has the last ones you see going east on 14.

That's true, along with San Diego.

I don't hate palm trees, but I do despise places without real seasons. At least as far as a place to live year around.

Should we get SnoWiz to start predicting snow totals?

Remember... his location will be right on the line for the big snow event on Wednesday.     Splitting hairs!    It looks good for several inches in many places.       :)
