December 2014 Observations for the Pacific Northwest

I'd dare say only 1985 and 1955 would compare.

I'm bored, so I checked. 1985 had 6, and 1955 had 5.

Granted, both those Novembers had days that got easily colder than anything seen in Nov 2014, but the sheer number of cold lows this past month appears to be pretty much unprecedented for that station.

What would everyone like, 1950 or 1880? Was there a month long event like 1950 but even more epic? I want complete epic ness!!

I want it to snow at my house once this winter and I want the McRib to come back and STAY back.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

Jan 1950 was such an extreme outlier when you consider both sustained/repeated cold and heavy snowfall. You'd be hard pressed to find any single month on record that beats it for overall wintry weather, at least for the Puget Sound region.

Though I'm sure snow wizard will point out some month from the 1860s that tops Jan 1950, experienced by a handful of hardy pioneers ;)

I think you will get one, but not the other.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Wasn't it the 1875 blast where the Eola station which is near Salem had a 3pm temp of 7 and ft Canby on the coast had a 3pm temp of 8?

I know I posted this before, but I have a friend who lives somewhat near the Eugene airport. The ornamental palms in her neighborhood were killed last December.

I would easily take 1950.  The month was so much colder and the snow lasted through the entire month.  The 1880 event was epic, but it never got really cold and it moderated quickly.

What would that 540 thickness line going through northern Los Angeles County mean in terms of temperatures in the L.A. area?

I'd ask this in the California sub-forum but I thought I'd have a better shot at getting an answer here.

Given the look of that map I would say highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s.

Pretty much a dry blast for the region. Kinda lame.

I think January 1854 was much sexier than January 1875.

You would be seriously sick of the snow and the damage and hassle after a January 1950.

A Jan 1880 redux would bring much worse damage.  As it was there was considerable property damage even with the low population then.  In 1950 much of the snow was dry and didn't cause as much tree damage as wet snows do.

1862, maybe. Most of those others still don't top 1950 from a combined consistent snow/extreme cold aspect for western WA.

January 1950 was colder, but 1915-16 was definitely better for snow for most of western WA. Kind of a toss-up if you're ranking 20th century winters. I prefer the more extreme snow, personally.

It's fun to go back and look at old tweets from the 1875, 1862 events and the such.

You really have to dig to find good info that far back but it's there.  Not so much on Twitter though.

Indeed.  I would call the two a toss up.

+PDO. The PDO has been VERY + lately. Thoughts?

The palm trees in Washougal still have a fighting chance!

The climate system has been stuck in a quasi-+ENSO state for awhile. It hasn't manifested into a full blown Nino, but the circulations have been decidedly Nino-ish for the majority of the past couple years.

The pressure index over the north Pacific has remained relatively high for the most part, still indicative of the -PDO phase tendencies.

Ah, but we were talking about a single month. Yes, it would be tough to beat the combined snowyness of Jan/Feb 1916.

Predict fine details of a non-existent snow event a week out and you should expect some mocking... it would be crazy to think otherwise!

Any palm trees in Stevenson? I'm guessing you wouldn't have moved there if there were.

Maybe we'll get lucky and get to witness the onset of the next ice age destroy every palm tree in North America.

The onset of an ice age would do more than pluck out some palm trees.    Jesse's precious ecosystem which has been destroyed with this runaway global warming will be buried in ice and entirely dead.  We have to watch for anomalous cold... it can be just as deadly as anomalous warmth!

I wish there were historical data in my 7 Lakes micro climate for 1950. Hard to base it off of Everett data, or even Arlington for that matter. I really hope we can experience a 1950 event before we all die of old age...or too many Mc Ribs.
