Front Ranger
I'd dare say only 1985 and 1955 would compare. I'm bored, so I checked. 1985 had 6, and 1955 had 5. Granted, both those Novembers had days that got easily colder than anything seen in Nov 2014, but the sheer number of cold lows this past month appears to be pretty much unprecedented for that station. BLI snowman
I think the ones in Mexico and Florida will probably always be safe. No palms out here. Washougal has the last ones you see going east on 14. Hopefully global warming makes them more prevalent. It'd be great to see Portland resemble the Redding area in a few years. I want complete epic ness!! Jan 1950 was such an extreme outlier when you consider both sustained/repeated cold and heavy snowfall. You'd be hard pressed to find any single month on record that beats it for overall wintry weather, at least for the Puget Sound region. Though I'm sure snow wizard will point out some month from the 1860s that tops Jan 1950, experienced by a handful of hardy pioneers 1 Quote A forum for the end of the world. snow_wizard
You would be seriously sick of the snow and the damage and hassle after a January 1950. A Jan 1880 redux would bring much worse damage. As it was there was considerable property damage even with the low population then. In 1950 much of the snow was dry and didn't cause as much tree damage as wet snows do. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies! Front Ranger
+PDO. The PDO has been VERY + lately. Thoughts? The palm trees in Washougal still have a fighting chance! The climate system has been stuck in a quasi-+ENSO state for awhile. It hasn't manifested into a full blown Nino, but the circulations have been decidedly Nino-ish for the majority of the past couple years. The pressure index over the north Pacific has remained relatively high for the most part, still indicative of the -PDO phase tendencies. 1 Quote A forum for the end of the world.
