I remember waiting for those outlooks. Didn't they come out Tuesday and Thursday? I remember waiting for that 3pm update forecast for the evening.  Of course the marine forecast was first so you knew if snow was in the marine forecast you we're gold.

And then the inevitable switch from arctic to, it appears things are sliding to the east, some areas may see a mix but overall we appear to have escaped the brunt of cold weather, sometimes that would occur within just hours of one broadcast to the next the day of said event.

Or when things went from a non event to a massive event in a matter of hours like in December 1996!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I remember Todd Johnson at KOMO being one of the first on-air mets to break the news of a "major event" in the coming days, IIRC, it snuck up on a lot of folks. I even remember talking to Ted Buehner many years later and even he (being the MIC) at the local nws office saying their raw data via AWIPS was "wonky", when he and the other nws staff realized what was actually going to happen, all hell broke loose.

What does thickness have to do with temperature?

It measures the vertical distance from the surface level (1000mb) to roughly the jet stream level (500mb) of the atmosphere. The lower values will indicate a smaller distance, thus a denser/colder airmass.
