Arctic cold/LES

-17 at the airport this morning. I believe my neighborhood bottomed out around -13, so that's the new coldest temp I've experienced. I had to start my car and it made a really ugly sound, hopefully the clunker handles the weekend well.

NWS Hastings says it will be the coldest week since 1983, just as I mentioned yesterday.  Will fall short of 1983, but you are in rare company when compared to that outbreak.

What's crazy neither 1983 or today even comes close to the winter of 1936!

Despite the numerous individual cold records in jeapordy through the
middle of the month, if the current forecast holds, the first half
of February (1-15) will average almost 10 degrees warmer than the
same period in 1936, when the average temperature through the 15th
of the month was only -4.1 degrees in Grand Island.

Feb 1936- is the King when to comes to cold relative to the means. I will look up some maps later, but places in ND ( if my memory is correct) avg -5 to -10F  for the entire month. And than July of 36' came, the greatest extreme switch I know of  in all of climate.

Feb 1936- this stat alone is nuts-

At Devil's Lake, North Dakota, the average temperature for five weeks ending in February was −21 °F (−29.4 °C).

My late grandparents told stories about 1936 and the complete extremes from winter to summer.   Throw on top of that, one of the driest times in history.  This without access to irrigation, A/C, and other modern conveniences that we take for granted today.

This cold wave might rival Dec. of 1983 when it is finally over.  Both had deep snowpacks.  Both will be long in nature.   Dec. 1983 happened when the amount of daylight hours is the shortest, and sun angle is at a minimum.  I will have to find information on wind chills from 1983.  Temps this coming weekend will rival the lowest temps of that cold wave for sure, Central Nebraska wise.

Xmas day 1983 was the coldest  day i ever  witnessed  in Maryland  where i grew up, 18 below!  Have experienced  colder in Iowa.

Euro is back to looking more "mild" for the weekend. Already through the worst of the cold if it's right. Meanwhile GFS is trending colder if anything. Kind of important when its the difference between uncomfortable cold and "frostbite within minutes" cold.

Its funny how much higher the sun angle is in Feb. I had ice in front of my house this morning and w full sun throughout the day w temps in the teens, it melted away. Just amazing!

Arctic air gets reinforced by the weekend here in mby w temps going below zero at nite, perhaps -5 or colder.

I noticed a pocket of deep cold up in N WI this morning and was thinking to myself “I bet @Madtown posts a rediculous reading this morning.”  Now that’s cold!

Meh. An evening window thermometer temp during the "Big Freeze" for 7 weeks Jan/Feb '94 in NMI. As mentioned earlier my place was balmy due to proximity to the shoreline. Much colder inland where I worked so I was glad to seek the heat LOL

Keep in mind, we're in the toasty Mitt. Even more crazy is that it was the last week of the month which was worst.

Here's the colder lows I kept track of that month:  -19F (2/5), -23F (2/21), -15F (2/23), -21F (2/27), -16F (2/28)

Models are pushing the coldest day to Monday now, euro still warmer than GFS though. School cancellations (including UNL) would be more of a possbility.

Already talking around here of no school on Monday if these temps and wind chills verify. Principal mentioned in our school announcements this morning to dress warmly and be prepared for possible school activities being postponed or cancelled in the coming days.

It is interesting to note the continued pushback of the brutal cold. At one point it looked like this Thursday thru Saturday nights would be the worst. Then it pushed back to Saturday/Sunday. Now it's the beginning of next week.

I wouldn't mind avoiding sub -20 temperatures

High was 13 today, looks like we'll likely stay below 10 for at least a week now. Basically going to be almost 2 weeks with highs in single digits or lower, barely above one day.
