West side of Olympia as of 7 PM is up to approximately 5 inches and still snowing steadily.

My front door in Troutdale this morning. Last night was incredible with 45-55 mph gusts for many hours. I'm on a hill around 300' directly facing east.

On the possible late month cold snap....the EPS control really emphasized the possibility of the PNA block merging with a new NAO block once again.  Could be something good coming.

Check out the temp changes this morning.  A couple weather station pics from early this morning and then some spaced 10 minutes apart.  Never seen such a rise in my life.  Those SW winds are something, as were the N winds the last few days.

Relentless barrage of falling ice.  It’s been like this since last night. I think it’s safe to say we’re staying indoors today.

That's insane!  The trees must be breath a sign of relief to get this weight off though...

That's awesome in the other way of dropping that quickly!  I find it interesting how we track the cold air coming in, but when it's a huge ice storm (like down here) we track the warm air too.  I was up at 3 AM refreshing the obs out of Oregon seeing when it was coming.

Still holding at 32.5 here.

If that 12z GFS verifies this will go down as another top tier February for sure.  There are many ensemble members that agree with the operational.  -6 on the mean for 850s already for the period in question.

It's pretty mind blowing that 3 of the past 5 Februaries.  Have had at least 6 inches of snow for most locations in the Puget Sound area.

Ironically Seneca Oregon is the location that holds Oregon's state record low of -54F, set in February 1933. That reading would have beaten the old state record by 2.5 degrees in the same location.

The warmup just hit here.  It has risen 3 degrees in just a few minutes.  That was a nice cold snap for sure.  IMBY it managed the following.

1. 4 consecutive highs of 35 or below

2. 2 consecutive highs below freezing

3. 7 consecutive sub freezing lows

4. 2 daily minimum temps in the low 20s with wind and snow falling at the time

The average for the first half of the month was 37.9.  Not too shabby!

Looking like a decent chance for a overrunning event here early Thursday morning. Snow levels will be 500-1000 ft. Wrf is showing a few inches of snow here extending down to shelton.

Even the 1/15 to 2/15 average temp is probably cooler than average in lots of spots.

Looking like a vastly better back half of the winter than first half overall.

That is nice.

Considering  all the record cold in the CONUS, I think it’s about time for the Seattle area to have a top tier winter like 1950 or 1969 with 40-60 inches of snow.

We need that crusty top on the snow. That really slows the melting down.

Had to run down to Smokey Point this morning so I took a drive up to my old place as well as up around the lakes...

First I was reminded that my old area will retain the cold slightly longer than many places in the area, the trees were all still coated was a full degree colder than my current place. Also that minivan off the road at the south end of Lake Goodwin was the exact place where my school bus went off the road on a cold and snowy day in late 1992, you tap the brakes and the angle of the road takes you right to the ditch! That was a fun morning as a kid with an impromptu snowball fight that happened while we were all running around there waiting for another bus to pick us up! Memories!
Back here at home it’s 37 and raining.

Unfortunately the models keep the night just above freezing this week.  Earlier this week it had appeared we would get a few below freezing.  Still possible though.

That’s juniper butte heading north. In Redmond there was about 8” total and then last night when I went to bed it was 19 with very light flurries falling. When I got up this morning at 4:30 there was light zr falling at 24 degrees and the roads were hell driving into Bend this morning. I’d sayabout 3 miles before I got to Bend the temp suddenly jumped to freezing and as I got deeper into Bend it was 40 when I arrived at work. Nice little stretch of winter weather.

I’m calling it now...It has been a long time since we have had a big event in November...I believe 2010 was the last biggie. I did have a nice shot in late November 2014 but I’m talking 1985 or 1996 or 2006, or 2010 caliber...

We will have a top tier November 2021!!!
And then January 2022 is going to rock our worlds!
