New Year's Weekend Potential Major Winter Storm

Very nasty here in Central Nebraska.  Glad I am not traveling.  Visibility is still so bad I can barely see the house across the street.  Local law enforcement tweeting to not travel unless necessary.  I can't imagine how bad it must be outside of town in the country.  Basically we are flat with cornfields everywhere so nothing to stop the wind and blowing snow.  Hope we cycle through another more major storm Tom.

Mid/Late Winter is usually when you get the monster storms to brew.  Should be an interesting Winter from here on out.

You are correct.  I am waiting for a big one.  Tom, you know your stuff.  Around Nebraska, our largest storms tend to come in November then again in Feb., March, and lately in April.  I was just talking to the kids about an hour ago of the largest snowstorms or blizzards that I have experienced.  I only mentioned one in January, which was in 1996.  Still the worst storms in my lifetime was the double blizzards of late March and early April of 1987.  Snow drifts over barns, semis completely buried and not found until the snow melted.  Rode snowmobiles on 30-40 foot drifts.  Maybe 2015 we will have more stories to tell.

It might be a touch above freezing out, but it's turned icy in the last couple hours. Ground never had a chance to warm up.

Skilling just posted that last nights heaviest snows fell along the I39 corridor. Did the Hi-res models pick up on that, Tom?

I didn't see the RPM last night so I couldn't say for certain, but I do know the heaviest snow was forecast to be NW of the city.

This was a very sloppy storm. From snow, to a wintry mix. I never went over to rain. Trees were beautiful with ice crystals all over them. Streets were very slick, especially subdivisions. Last night the freezing rain changed to a very light freezing drizzle with temps hovering around that 32, 33 degree mark. At times, some fog was trying to form too.

Have to take pictures today. Looks like winter now. Right at 2.0" here with -SN falling now. Grass is completely covered for the first time this winter.

The amount of snow wasn't much, maybe an 1-1.5" but man we had blizzard conditions for a couple hours. Out in the country there was zero visibility in spots and snow drifts are a couple feet tall. Tough to tell what our snow depth is but it's somewhere around 3" or so. This puts my snow total for the year at 9".

Been snowing moderately for a half hour. Temp fell 6° since 10am. Probably get about 3" today.
