January 2015 Observations for the Pacific Northwest

Skagit Weather

Recommended Posts

Something in that river drainage changed.

Or heavy rain events are more common in current regime... or maybe global warming.

Most of the flooding comes from rain in the mountains where nothing has changed.

Well, we broke Kamloops's all time contiguous 24-hour and 2-day snowfall record: 39 cm. Most since the record 40 cm in 1927.

http://t.co/pJQ9CJ8ks4

I'm surprised there wasn't more than that in 2008, I was down around Christina Lake that year and there was easily over 100cm. Guess Kamloops was a bit far north for that.

Super foggy this morning.

Crystal clear with offshore flow at my house.

12Z Canadian looks great at 240 hours!    :(

We will pay for this come March-June.

This is so true! Like some of us have been saying, the setup will improve for colder air to arrive. More often than not over the last 7 years the ideal setup always seems to occur sometime after February. A little to late for us low-landers but epic for the mountains. :) -- I do have hope this is not the case (again) this year.

Call me during bow season!  That looks like its off Rocky Pt Rd.  If so, you'll have fun driving down it in the snow.

It sure is!  There were a bunch up here during bow season, but they had everything shut down due to fire danger.

I live just up the hill from there, not the same view though.

61 currently at Newport. Salem won't get out of the low 40s today. This is follow a typical mild inversion pattern in the valley. Unlike the January 2013 cold inversion, this one starts off fairly mild (High of 46 yesterday), and progressively gets a few degrees colder each day.

Currently 71 at Horse Creek at 3300' about 7 miles east of my house.

My location is great for radiational cooling. You know its a warm winter airmass when after a night of completely clear skies and no wind I only drop to 33.

Same here with the cooling, never got below freezing last night under clear skies.  It was 50f when I left my place at 10 am, I am going to go home and do some yard work, it is disgusting in town with thick, stinky fog.

Wow... I noticed it is close to 60 at Timberline on Mt. Hood.  We are getting torched.

In the Washington Cascades south of I-90 many locations at around 5K are running near 50 degrees.. Really feels like April out there...

Down here in the valley it feels like January though. 42 at SLE 40 at EUG.

East winds in Stevenson and a 47/39 so far.

In Vancouver now getting my license renewed. Mild up in Cascade Park, probably mid-50s. Last time I renewed my license was on a similarly mild January day about five years ago.

Yup, time flies. Was 24 then, 29 now. A comparison of photos shows that I look roughly the same, though. I guess all of that worrying about cold weather hasn't taken the toll that I've feared! Fretting over record Max/Mins is famous for causing crow's feet.

I look like a fat a** in mine from 2011.  I've lost about 20 pounds since then.  Lean, mean, cold phase-hardened machine!

Nice!

My passport picture is probably one of the worst ever taken of me. I look like a pumpkin.

That was also in 2010. Analog?

Not under the inversion.  This is certainly one dank and mucky inversion.

If we can't get widespread cold and snow, we might as well keep the nice sunrises and sunsets going...
