January 2015 Observations for the Pacific Northwest

Skagit Weather

Recommended Posts

Kershaw was awesome...Except in the post season.

Russell Wilson is 0-1 against the only team I really care about. You don't even now how pumped I am for tomorrow night. Saw 5 Ducks games in person this year, wish I could be at the game tomorrow night, but family comes first.

Who cares what Wilson did in college?    I am talking about the team around him now.   You are all over the map tonight.   Talking about the Patriots like a life-long Bostonian.

I want to cheer for Oregon tomorrow as the Pac-12 representative... but then it would be nice to see them lose as well.    I guess I just watch for fun... either way is fine with me.

I started listening to Oregon games in the radio in 1991 when I was 7 years old. The first Ducks game I went to was in 1994 against Arizona State. Gone to at least one game a year every year since then except for the years I was living in Oklahoma. Even went to a bowl game a few years ago. I went to college in Oklahoma, but my brother is an UO grad and law school grad.

I am a lifelong Husky hater. I am old enough to remember when we were their little brother so I relish every victory over them.

As for the Pats, I've been a huge fan since Tom Brady hit the scene. Definitely my favorite NFL player of all time.

Wilson was the only reason the Badgers had a chance in that game. He's obviously a winner.

You know what the "0" on their helmets stands for, right? O national championships. ;)

But like Tim, I will be rooting for them tomorrow night, because it's the PAC 12. Been 10 years since we've had a PAC 12 champ. So glad the SEC is out of it.

I really like Chris Peterson. I can't believe UW finished 8-6 with 3 1st team all-Americans....

Its crazy that Montana never threw a pick in the Super Bowl. 11-0 TD/INT ratio. Brady broke his playoff TD record yesterday.

Montana never threw for 4,000 yards in a season...Different game back then though.

No definitely not a fan of the 49ers.

Its funny how everyone thinks everybody is a foot ball fan. Lady today asked me about seahawks. I dont watch football, never have even watched a game. She looked at me like I was a alien. I asked her if she seen the latest ecmwf 12z run.

Hopefully you informed her that the Euro looked promising?

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

From what I have seen the weather doesn't really matter that much to my garden. I generally grow crops on almost a half-acre and even during the "terrible summers" of 2010 and 2011 the crops grew fine. Of course the tomatoes struggled during those years, but the enormous production of the beans more than made up for it. The nice thing about living in a relatively moderate climate is that other than weeding we barely have to do anything for the garden. With the hotter summers I water it maybe once or twice a week and I always have more food than I can eat. Oh, and this is living on completely terrible soil with the land around me called starvation ridge.

Weird. Then again, Tim lives right by Rattlesnake Ridge, which apparently makes no sense either.

Gotta love those early settlers.

I had tons of Tomatoes this last year. I only had 6 vines though. I'm going to try growing maybe 15-20 or more vines. All of my Tomatoes did really well. Ironically, the Early Girl's ripened first! This last year was also my first time being somewhat successful at Corn. Some people on the opposite street of my had much better Corn than I did though. For some reason I thought I could stagger my planting out of Corn, but the ones I planted later did not get as big as the ones I planted earlier, and my climate is such that all the Corn basically were ready at the same time. I'm going to try row covers this year I think. All the Corn was really sweet though. I grew 200-300 plants or so, but not every plant had good enough corn on it. I had to weed it a lot too.

I could go on about all the other crops I grew, but like I said, I am not allowed to turn this into the Agriculture forum.

Tons of hazelnut/filbert orchards going in in the Willamette Valley. Turkey is the other main hazelnut growing area in the world. But they had a big freeze a couple years ago that killed many of their mature trees so they are adding tons here in the valley.

Every day I drive past grass seed fields which are being converted to hazelnut orchards.

At least the 0z GFS is legitimately chilly for the second half of the run.  Even that is pretty rare in the last half of January these days.

Here's an interesting stats document for 2013. http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/stats/YinReview/2013_Agrifood_YIR_Web.pdfI guess 2014 is too newly finished to have a review for it. It seems in 2013, Blueberries and Apples were the biggest sellers from BC. I believe I read the US was the biggest importer of BC's Fruit & Nut exports.

I think this is one place the eastern US beats us.  They usually don't even have to water there because it's so wet.  Here it gets bone dry during the growing season.  In this area you pretty much have to water daily because it's much hotter than where you live.

Hazelnuts where always big business in Marion County growing up. Over the past 10 years the number of acres of blueberries has exploded. Every year I see new orchards and blueberry bushes going in. When I was a kid there were 5 dairies within 2 miles of our farm. Now there are none. There were also a lot of marionberries, strawberries, and rasberries. My dad had 3 acres of Raspberries. Now its mainly blueberries. There is only one u-pick strawberry field in the area, it is kind of sad.

I think this is one place the eastern US beats us.  They usually don't even have to water there because it's so wet.  Here it gets bone dry during the growing season.  In this area you pretty much have to water daily because it's much hotter than where you live.

Not in 2011 you didn't. Haha That was a year of late growth of everything. I think the Strawberries/Potatoes etc. were behind in growth for us.

I'm surprised nobody else has commented on the 0z GFS.

We beat you at a lot of things. Hopefully, football is an exception to that.
