February 2015 PNW Discussion

BLI snowman

Recommended Posts

This winter might actually be worse than 2004-5. We had about an inch more of Snow in Nov/Dec in 2004 than in 2014, and Jan 2005 we had roughly 6-7" of snow. We even had approx 1-2" Feb 2005.

2004/05 wasn't even that bad here. I had snow on the ground for a long time, and a decent amount of it.

Assuming we don't get anymore snow, I think this will be the worst winter I've seen since 1991/92. Only an inch of snow here so far.

2012-13 was pretty close for us here, but I saw snow falling a few more times that winter. I know B.C. had a bit more snow, too.

2004-05 was pretty decent for northern WA and B.C. Long snowcover period.

At a very local level, it is easy for me to give 2012-2013 a passing grade.  Maybe a D.  15" of snow here at Shawnigan Lake with 5.5" falling on Christmas day.  Several very marginal events, there was more like a trace-2" at sea level here that winter.

Assuming it doesn't snow here anymore this winter, it will be the worst snow year since 82-83.

Yeah, even 91-92 had 2-3" at the end of October here. Not as much cold air, but snowier nonetheless.

4.31" for my station in Battle Ground for January.  That's my driest January in the 5 years here.

Average high was 49.8, and the average low was 35.  Mean temp of 42 which was 3.8 degrees above the average.

Something else notable was the lack of wind and corresponding fog.  My average daily high wind speed was just 8 mph with a peak wind gust of only 21 mph for the month.

Along with that was 17 days of fog.

Here's to hoping that was the most boring January I'll ever experience, but then again I have said that numerous times in the last decade.

Alright kiddos, the year to beat this month is 1991 for PDX, 1968 for Downtown (probably a better comparison to PDX at this point with the heat island and whatnot).

The toasty February of 1968 featured a very warm late Summer/early Fall beforehand and went on to be one of the greatest Niños ever. Hmmm... Will be interesting to see how we dodge that bullet this time around!

I checked the forum after being away for most of yesterday... I think if we removed snow_wizard's depressive gripes and all the football commentary there would be hardly any activity...

I'm looking forward to continued mild weather. It makes for some nice cycling and hiking weather even with the rain. And flowers are starting to come out!

I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm looking forward to more mild weather, but when life gives you lemons...

This could be one of those Februarys when the flowers, buds etc make a big showing.

Stop living in the past, geezer.

Without the past your anxiety/paranoia level wouldn't be where it is today. Climate change only cripples people emotionally because goodies were so much more goody in... the past.

A year ago today we were 20 years past being a year and about 10 days away from a VERY significant snow storm in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area.

Decent chance now I'll be moving away from the PNW for at least a couple years. Maybe when I come back the torch will be over. If I do leave I'll probably keep my house here and rent it out, so I'd probably just move back to this location when my kids are a little older. Still a chance I'll stay, but my wife really needs more family support right now. It breaks her heart to leave to, but I work a lot and she could use family support with the kids.

Weather wise you can't possibly do any worse than what we are seeing. I would D**n near take anywhere over here for the next few months.

Yes. I've lived in Oklahoma before and it is much more interesting in terms of weather than here. The negatives are that it is a little like living in a 3rd world country in terms of infrastructure, wealth disparity, wages, social tolerance, etc...

On the other hand I could probably put 20% on a decent home and use it as rental when I come back here. I might be moving more toward north central Oklahoma this time too. More active severe weather season there than ne Oklahoma where I lived before.

We were in the same situation when our boys were infants and even toddlers... my wife really wanted to move back to MN to be by family.

And you have 3 kids under the age of 3!

The 0z is certainly a disaster. I think I'm about done for this season.

Just remember how we were all done in mid Febuary of 2011...and then the end of the month struck!! Over a foot of snow fell in my area with sub freezing highs! You just never know!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I'm just out of energy. I think the only recent winter to approach the level of what we are seeing was 1991-92. We need to avoid a multi year Nino here or the nightmare will get worse before it's over.

Does this look familiar to anyone? This has almost been a repeat of last winter.

Before I get crucified for this, as much as I love dark and damp weather (and I really do), a small part of me is looking forward to getting this winter and football season behind us and move onto spring and summer.

If we could fast forward to April right now I would be okay with it.

Fred we have been in Spring for the past 12 months.

We had fall in October, winter in November, and spring in December and January. Perhaps Feb will be summer like!

Agreed. At any rate we're really only a few weeks away from bountiful flowers everywhere!  ;)

Wow, the 12Z shows zero chance for snow at the ski area level for the entire run and on top of that it shows warm rain for most of the time to wash away what might be left. This is incredible.

Nelsen is saying there's a glimmer of hope for the second half of the month.

"...there is still a strong ridge, but it’s shifted farther west and north.  More like where we saw it for parts of November.  This is a setup that could allow cold air through the backdoor from the north or northeast.  The operational run during this period has several cool and slightly wet upper-level troughs coming down from the northwest over the top of the ridge."

I will definitely be rooting against any back door arctic blast. That just means dry cold.

Towards the end of February we would be looking at temps around 40 degrees during the day time. No thank you.
