12Z ECMWF is actually pretty impressive with this little event... it rains from this afternoon into tomorrow morning out here.    Might pick up another .75 which will put us at over 3 inches of rain in the last 9 days.

Very impressive bout of IO forcing coming up. Water is on fire across the basin and convergence from trades is building.

This will produce a trade burst smack dab over the IPWP/Maritime continent with time. It reminds me of the 2010-12 period which had lots of WPAC trades and brief warm season DOKWs/ENSO spikes. Though there’s distinction w/ WPAC OHC this season.

If this were midsummer we’d probably be looking at an ugly pattern that would roast everyone (except the PNW, ironically 😂). But in May it is a changeable relationship statistically. Much more state dependent.

Here’s a helpful resource from Dr. Paul Roundy on seasonal cycle of MJO relationship(s) to the extratropical wave field.

I’d recommend bookmarking it. 🤓

As can be seen, the ugly phases for the West during midsummer are phases 5-8 (Pacific/WHEM), while phases 1-4 (Indian Ocean/EHEM) are troughier out there.

But that relationship changes markedly from season to season.

Moderate rain moving in now... this is the 7th day in the last 10 days with rain here.    And it will likely be 8 out of 11 with rain continuing into tomorrow morning.     If the ECMWF is right... we will be well over 3 inches of rain in that 11 day period.

It does not seem too droughty up here.    Its been pretty normal since the end of the April warm spell.   And currently right around normal for the year so far as well.

Speaking of the IO..wowzers. Those waters are about to spontaneously combust.

And what does that entail? Combust has to do with heat so your saying we are in for a wild hot ride?

Now THATS what I call a beautiful spring day. 😁 Have you considered making a sleeping sound soother track with that?

No noisy critters emerging from the ground either like back on the East coast 😱

They started emerging in the DC heat island last night. But so far it’s confined to the warmest locations only.

Not nearly as much UHI here so we probably won’t see them until next week. But we’re also surrounded by old woods and protected land, so when they do emerge it’ll be in much larger numbers than downtown DC. In 2004 it was full on bonkers.

NOAA released the new 30yr climate normals today.

Avg July high now peaks at 90. 🤮 My little talking point that any 90+ day is above avg is officially shattered.
