March 2015 Observations and Discussion

I know parts of the US were cold again in February, but meanwhile on the rest of the planet.....

The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for February 2015 was the second highest for February in the 136-year period of record, at 0.82°C (1.48°F), above the 20th century average of 12.1°C (53.9°F). The warmest February occurred in 1998, which was 0.86°C (1.55°F) above average. Nine of the past 12 months have been either warmest or second warmest on record for their respective months (March and July 2014 were each fourth warmest, while November was seventh warmest.

Ha ha some on here will cringe at this.  I am sure the data is made up.... Wink wink

Yeah it's made up. It's cold in my backyard ;)

Been staying below freezing all day... beginning to think there might be a wintry mix tonight before it can warm up.

2021-2022: 11.6", 02/21

2020-2021: 15.6"

2019-2020: ~10"

2018-2019 winter snowfall total: 29.5"

2017-2018: 9.0", 2016-2017: 14.0"

Pretty interesting note from Lot after the storm on 3/23

"For Chicago, this brought the seasonal total up to 50.1". This now makes 6 of the past 8 winters with snowfall totals in excess of 50" for Chicago. This comes after only one such winter during the 25 year stretch from 1982-2007"

Chicago folks really living in a heyday for snow

So you think the Illinois-Wisconsin border will get 10" like that map is showing? 2 feet for the UP?

After the Clipper snows that produced 10"+ totals in WI/MN and the coming Lake Effect snows in the UP, both of us were wrong about believing this model's projection last week.  Another wintry system hits the UP for Easter weekend that dumps more snow.  Would not be surprised to see 2'+ totals up there.

Oh ya, and I won't be surprised if I seen stories of Easter weekend snows around Chicago while I'm out here soaking up the sun rays.

Weakening the global warming argument is data showing that the North Polar ice cap is increasing in size. Recent satellite images from NASA actually reflect an increase of 43% to 63%.

This is quite the opposite of what the global warming faction warned us.

In 2007, while accepting his Nobel Prize for his global warming initiative, Al Gore made this striking prediction, “The North Polar ice cap is falling off a cliff. It could be completely gone in summer in as little as seven years. Seven years from now.

Leaked emails from global warming scientists state that the Earth is not warming, such as this one from Kevin Trenberth that states, “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty we can’t.”

So we have this:

Temp has actually gone down since 1998, and the peak of the warming was between 1978 and 1998

North Polar ice cap is increasing while Al Gore said it would be completely gone by last year.

Global Warming scientist who even admitted that their is lack of warming and it's a "travesty" that they can't figure out why it isn't warming

yet liberals think this is such a big deal. Why?

Coming into March there was a lot of talk about it possibly being generally colder and snowier than normal, and some folks north and east certainly saw some of that, but here in Cedar Rapids we only had 0.8" of snow the entire month (March 3rd).  That's on par with the least snowy March over at least the last eight years.

season snowfall: 34.8"

'22-23: 30.2"      '21-22: 27.1"      '20-21: 52.5"      '19-20: 36.2"      '18-19: 50.2"      '17-18: 39.5"

Average snowfall: ~30"

i am telling this that al gore is a fool that the ice cap is not going any time soon that we are going through global cooling and just by saying that the ice sheild will be completly gone by next year so don't believe al gore at all.

This March is wrapping up to be colder than normal for sure. Snowfall is running pretty close to normal. We'll see if we get anything tonight - radar is starting to light up further north over the Lake.

Ladies and gentleman, the typical climate change skeptic. In all seriousness, I'm not sure that Money and Tim understands that Al Gore is a politician and not a scientist. Also America is not the only country in the world either. Pretty much every single scientific organization in the world has written a statement accepting the scientific consensus of anthropogenic climate change. Take a look Tim... http://www.opr.ca.gov/s_listoforganizations.php

Lake Effect snows in Chicago???

REGARDING LAKE EFFECT POTENTIAL...SUBTLE SFC TROUGH IS MOVING
SOUTH DOWN THE LAKE THIS EVENING WITH TENDENCY FOR MEAN BOUNDARY
LAYER FLOW BEHIND THIS TROUGH TO VEER TO NORTH-NORTHEASTERLY.
ALREADY SEEING SOME ISOLATED MORE ROBUST LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS
BLOSSOMING NE OF MKE AND WITH THERMODYNAMICS LIKELY TO ONLY
IMPROVE THROUGH THE NIGHT WOULD EXPECT SNOW SHOWER COVERAGE TO
ALSO INCREASE. HI-RES MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS A 3-6 HOUR WINDOW OF
MEAN FLOW VEERING TO THE EAST OF DUE NORTH FROM AROUND MIDNIGHT
UNTIL SUNRISE WHICH COULD BEGIN SENDING LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS
ONSHORE INTO NE IL AND CHICAGO METRO AREA. GIVEN THE SOMEWHAT
MARGINAL TEMP DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN LAND AND MARINE LAYER DOESNT
APPEAR A STRONG LAND/LAKE CONVEREGENCE ZONE WILL DEVELOP...SO
PROBABLY LOOKING FOR MAINLY SCATTERED AND SOMEWHAT LOOSELY
ORGANIZED SNOW SHOWERS WHICH WILL HELP LIMIT ACCUMULATIONS. IN
ADDITION...PAVEMENT TEMPS ARE IN THE 40S THIS EVENING AND WITH
TEMPS STILL ABOVE FREEZING IT APPEARS MUCH OF THE SNOW WOULD
INITIALLY MELT ON ROADS CONFINING ACCUMULATIONS TO ELEVATED AND
GRASSY SURFACES. EVEN SO...FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOW A FAIRLY DEEP
MOIST ABSOLUTELY UNSTABLE LAYER DEVELOPING OVERNIGHT SO AT LEAST
ISOLATED HEAVIER SNOW SHOWERS COULD RESULT IN LOCALIZED ACCUMS OF
A COATING TO AROUND AN INCH. WILL BEEF UP POPS SLIGHTLY IN NE IL
AFTER MIDNIGHT AND GO WITH SCATTERED WORDING VS CHANCE AS PROB OF
SNOW SHOWERS BEING AROUND APPEARS SUFFICIENTLY HIGH.

A friend of mine said he watched the news and there could be a possible record cold high tomorrow at ORD???  Not sure if it will hit 26F but if it stays in the upper 20's with no snow cover, that's a pretty darn intense cold shot.

James, here is the 12z Euro snow map...I do think if the storm is as strong as it showed this run, thenit can generate more cold air associated with it.  Meanwhile, it hit the low 90's here while averaging 10-15F above normal through this weekend.

Lake Effect snows in Chicago???

Yep it did. And the pavement temps must have taken a dive because the roads are icy and there's been quite a few accidents this morning!

1.1" here. Highest report was 1.7" in Oak Park. 1.3" at WGN.

So the EURO says an Easter snowstorm is coming? What day is that forecast for?

Honestly, that would almost make up for the rest of this disappointing winter, but the chances of it happening like this are less than 5% this far out.

Wow, impressive for being March 27th!  Yesterday's 12z run had the storm for Sat/Sun, last night's 00z run same time frame but now has a cutter that is less impressive.  Both the AO/NAO look to be slightly negative during this period so it may line up to produce a significant system somewhere.

Running around -3.5° for this month.

This morning the roads were worst nearest to the lake where more snow fell. Some of the intra hour reports were on heavy snow around 2am. This is the latest I've ever seen LES!

Yesterday morning was very interesting indeed. Walked out my doorstep and everything was covered in snow. About a half inch had fallen and melted away by midday. More snow possible tonight and changing over to rain later on. Honestly, this is getting annoying. Spring is here. There should be no more snow. Cannot wait for thunderstorms and warm weather to finally arrive.

Had zero thunderstorms this month. Usually there's at least a crack of thunder with some rain in March, but not this year. Dry, cold month overall. Hopefully April turns around in the rainfall department.
