I snacked on plenty of plump red huckleberries this morning. Also plenty of thimbleberries. The latter did get burned in sunny spots, but the shaded ones did fine. A bumper crop for dewberries (the shaded ones are doing fine, but again the ones in the sunniest spots are damaged), but not so good a year for my namesake berries (not a surprise as they tend to prefer sunnier spots).

Now to make jam!

Went to Pamelia Lake, one of the few, as of now, unburned places in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. Nice easy hike. My 4 year old made it up and back easily.

No description available.

Did you have to get a permit? I know that area is under limited entry nowadays.

Growing up, I was up there and Marion Lake all the time.

Best trip I ever made was snowshoeing into Pamelia several years ago in December.

Yes, they have had limited entry permits to Pamelia since 1995, so I've never really bothered and just gone to Marion. Was looking at the site the other day and saw they had some available mid-week for Pamelia, so decided to check it out. It was nice, we had some commitments in town in the evening though, so we couldn't stay as long as I would have liked.

How were the mosquitoes? Heading up to Duffy, Mowich and Santiam lakes in a couple weeks with my daughter (barring a thunderstorm outbreak before then)

Not bad. I didn't notice any. There were some flies that were biting and drew blood.

Other than a few rare midges in the evenings, I don't think I have yet seen a mosquito this summer.

Maybe another sign of how dry it's been.

Back when my dad grew berries on his farm, he would always say hot weather would always make the berries smaller, though often they would be more flavorful. How are the huckleberries are tasting?

I haven't noticed a difference in taste but I'm a bit taste challenged.  My grandkids sure love them though.

Our local wild blueberries are quite shaded in comparison to blueberry farms I’d imagine.

What you’ve encountered is what I was expecting but instead we’ve gotten these monster berries. I only have photos of a unique white/pink variation we found this year, no taste difference.

Small huckleberries are delicious, though I never notice a strong correlation between size and taste. Usually the mediocre ones taste kind of dry and don’t have the juice pop I’m hoping for. Certainly the smaller the more flavorful holds true for wild crawling strawberries, as Costanza would say “this is like a taste explosion!… I think it moved.”

Wow!  Those are huge!  Must be a different strain than what we grow here.

I was hoping we could pull it off…69/55 a sub 70 day. Might get another one tomorrow hopefully. Now if we could get some meaningful rainfall that’d be nice but I’m guessing we will have to wait until September.

Ran to the lake after work to cover the boat before the massive storm tomorrow! It was lovely, I didn’t want to leave.

SEA came in with a sub-70 high at 69...  breaking the streak of 70+ days.

There were 4 days with highs below 70 last July... and also 4 in 2019 (including a high of 62).

Likely going to add another one tomorrow.

See, this is why I trust Wunderground a lot. In one of my previous post as a response to your post I mentioned that as the day went on Wunderground moved the daytime high for SEA around for a quite a bit and settled for a high of 69 at around 3PM after initially calling it for about 72 earlier in the morning. Obviously it looked like it was taking the marine influence into account.  Look like it nailed it.

Fun fact, Apple devices will not show a temp of 69 at all 🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!
