I figured the fire was gonna blow up today based on how hot it is down there.

Drove through that area a couple days ago (the stretch from Grants Pass to Cottage Grove are home to the best sun rises this side of Philadelphia). Everything was browned out. I had a pit stop and noticed some significant stress on some of th parking lot maples. I left with the feeling like we were getting to the climax of the recent mega drought. At what point do you just give up and start horticulture that is befitting of Central California?

Yikes…makes us up here in western WA feel lucky. Really hope the drought ends soon and doesn’t start creeping up here. We already are abnormally dry but not at that level.

We were down near Eatonville yesterday and I can't remember seeing Mt. Rainier so bare before. Almost the entire left side of it is snow-free. It was pretty striking to see.

Yes I noticed this as well. The entire NW face is melted put. Normally don’t see it like that until end of August.

Yeah, that’s the Willis Wall. One of the only parts of Rainier that mostly melts out in the summer, mainly because of how vertical the rock face is. Once the frozen on stuff melts there is no snow or glacier underneath.

Just read from the NWS in Spokane that a committee will be meeting to to determine if the Washington State all time high temperature of 118 was either tied or broken.  I know a station in Peshastin just a bit South of the Highway 2/97 conjunction recorded 119

I get that it's a big deal, since it's an all-time high for the state. But seems like it should be pretty straightforward.

Was it an officially recognized station that met calibration and siting standards? If so, don't see why it wouldn't count.

Ideally it would be a station with a decently long, reliable period of record, too...so maybe that's a factor up for debate with the committee.

My guess would be that assessing conformance with siting standards would be the main thing they do at that meeting. Then for the record candidate sites that meet the standards, send the instruments in for professional calibration to assess how correct the readings were.

It's called clown range for a reason.

I’d say since it wasn’t recorded at OLM it’s probably a good idea to throw it out.

Yeah... 110 here is pretty much unimaginable to me.    Well... it was unimaginable before June 2021.

Had some amazing noctilucent displays last year.  They’re the best close to the solstice.

For comparison purposes - Portland’s 116 record is higher than some Mojave Desert towns. Lancaster and Barstow have records of 115, and Victorville now ties Portland at 116. Las Vegas of course matches Salem at 117.

It's completely nonsensical. This past year and a half hasn't seemed real.

We are on the way back up towards the next solar maximum in 4 years.   I did not realize the solar maximum was so high in the 1950s.   The current lower maximums are more similar to what happened in the early 20th century.

Was just going to say. Smoke has arrived in the southern sky here.

I was thinking it looks a lot like late August or even early September driving around today. Everything is so completely dried out already. The smoke in the sky just adds to that feel. Then I remember it’s only the first week of July and we still have two more months of this sh*t.

That is actually true... probably going back thousands of years.    In the old Fort Snelling weather diaries from Minnesota in the 1830s and 1840s they talk about smoke every summer as the West and the Plains burned naturally and uncontrolled.
