It might actually put that fire out on the north cascades highway with some luck.

The Quartzville/Middle Santiam drainage was one of the few untouched by the fires last September. Of course they have a fire now. :( Could see the plume in the distance driving home from work.

That must hit close to home for you guys down in the willamette valley. Crazy to see this fire activity in mid July.

Quartzville Creek was one of my favorite places to fish when I was young. It's a beautiful drainage.

Thunderstorms can drop a ton of rain in a hurry. Our June rainfall was convective.

So far no direct hits over my part of town. A few vicinity thunders through mid-July is pretty mild.

Maybe so... but in cutting wood around here I have noticed many different widths of trees rings and not every year is a fast growth year.   After cutting down a tree... I can actually count back and cross reference the width of each ring with wet or dry summers and it matches.

There’s nothing “maybe” about it. That foliage that got killed IS NOT going to be replaced this year, and the reduction in foliage means less opportunity to photosynthesize.

It's called clown range for a reason.

That seems minor overall though... at least around here.

Thunderstorms over the Alaskan ice pack....

North of AK is literally doing better than the lowlands this year in that department.

That is actually incredible!  Very crazy pics to see them in person and the radar.

Currently 58F in north Puget Sound. Topped out at 75F.  That was our hottest day since July 4th which hit 76F.

Why? Just because it is no longer so visually obvious at the moment?

Because we have had 50 inches of rain this year and less than a month ago we were finishing up a period of 10 inches of rain in 4 weeks.    I realize its bad farther south... much worse in fact.   But I get a sense that our trees will just shake it off for the most part.

They actually did look like plumes of smoke in those pics... but thankfully they were just thunderstorm clouds.

They really did.  They would have fooled me.  I didn't even know we could see Eastern Washington's weather from the west side here. :D  That is pretty cool.  I have a direct view of the Cascade's, but usually all I see are clouds if there is any type of weather over there.  Nothing like the ones you photographed.

Heck, if it was near a volcano, I would be real worried.  Lol

It all depends on how much soil moisture there is. There are parts of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California that get 90" of moisture per year but which look nowhere near as lush as areas in Washington that get half that. Reason is summertime drought stress.

And the trees have still been injured; the chief change so far is that it is merely becoming less visible.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Gotta say, feel bad for Kayla right now. Montana (and Saskatchewan + southern Alberta) is about to transform into Texas for the foreseeable future. The death ridge just gets stuck there forever on the models.

Yeah... we are living a charmed life right now up here in this corner of the country.    I assume we will pay a price eventually.

But it has been just spectacular recently.  Cool mornings... warm sunny afternoons... deep blue sky with no haze.  Just perfect summer weather.

i guess a part of it is her location paying the price for incredible winters. i think last season was excellent for her area.

Euro is pretty much summer paradise here for the most part... 80s every day with onshore flow, excepting the trough which will give us lower high temps (70s) for a few days.

00z GFS and Canadian are both improved, variable to troughy with -PNA lean. Hopefully the Euro follows suit.

Also if there's any good news in the western states to be had, so far it looks like Arizona is actually having a monsoon this year.

Watching a few videos on the PHX/AZ facebook group of what looks like hurricane footage on the Gulf.

A couple storms like that would at least kickstart firefighting efforts up here.

Back in February... I assumed spring would be cold and wet in true Nina fashion and summer would be very slow to start and we might get into a nice pattern in August and September.    What else should we expect in the middle of a multi-year Nina during a solar minimum?

It has truly been the complete opposite of what I expected since the beginning of March.  Pretty surreal.
