I am particularly surprised at how good the air quality is here considering the fires this year.

If there's a good shot at the next plume I'll consider getting pictures.

Daily satellite imagery. Fires down in California certainly took off today. Bootleg fire looks ready to emit a pyro-CB. Lots of active fires in BC.

Great progress being made with the Red Apple Fire. Spreading has slowed down significantly with the fire now burning 11,000 acres at 50% containment.  Hopefully this one will be fully contained soon. Fire is also human-caused and charges could soon be filed for reckless burning.

My brother said he went out to where the Bootleg fire is burning several years ago. He said it was mile after mile of beetle killed trees and dense unhealthy drought stricken forests. He compared it to being inside a fireplace before someone lit a match.

BCs current statistics are 1135 fires have burned 680,000 acres.

Our cabin is still on evacuation alert.   The Flat lake fire has grown to nearly 40,000 acres but it’s movement towards hwy 97 has slowed, which is a major fire break between the fire and our family’s property.  Cooler temperatures have helped and the fire may receive some precip around mid week.

There were a lot of dry lightning strikes along Hwy 395 between Burns and John Day last night. They had a massive fire burn through much of the Strawberry Range in 2015 I believe. Wouldn't be surprised to see some smoke from that over the next couple of days.

Great article on the 2015 Canyon Creek Complex Fire south of John Day. It was about 110,000 acres.

Bootleg fire is 394k acres and 32% contained as of this morning.

820,000 acres burned in BC so far.  Dozens of fires that are forcing evacuation alerts and orders.

Fire crews have been forced to pull off of many fires in the afternoon and evenings the past 2 days as it has been to dangerous to continue suppression efforts.  25-35 mph wind gusts are forecast for this afternoon on many of these fires.

The flat lake fire moved a couple miles towards our cabin last night.  Sounds like it is burning near hwy97 and Green Lake road. There are more than 1000 residential properties threatened east of hwy 97 if the fire crossed in that area.

Hope your family cabin is still there by the end of the summer. About a month to at most 6 weeks left of fire season up there.

The fire that destroyed Lytton 3 weeks ago continues to burn out of control.  At around 60,000 ac the Lytton creek fire has forced the evacuation of the Town of Spences Bridge, about 20 Miles NE of Lytton

That is a fairly barren area... not much to burn.

The Thompson River canyon does open up into pretty extensive grass and sagebrush lands at Spences Bridge.  The mountain sides are treed above the town, especially on the south side.   And that canyon experiences strong winds almost every afternoon.

The 475,000 acre Elephant hill fire (2017) started in the grass and sagebrush not too far north of Spences bridge.

Can wildfires create supercells?? I had the impression tornadoes of this magnitude were only possible under normal circumstances.

The Bootleg Fire has burned at least 161 homes. An astonishing number, though several of the fires last Labor Day burned more.
