Yup. Sultan gets next to nothing snow-wise, about the same as Renton. Once you get to Startup it exponentially increases. My area is 15", Index is 20", Skykomish is 45". And I don't think a single town gets above 200 feet in elevation.

Startup: 150'

Index: 600'

Skykomish: 1000'

Missed yesterday bcuz schleep was 2 (two) good

Today will be three minutes and thirteen seconds SHORTER, and will average 0.1F COOLER than yesterday.

If you're curious, yesterday was 3:12 shorter than the day before it and also averaged 0.1F cooler. 6:25 and 0.2F in total for those keeping count.

Less than a month away from the equinox, where we lose the most daylight per day. For now though we plateau nicely. 50F in Meadowbrook. Easily the coolest night of the summer.

Well color me red. I've taken that drive so many times and never noticed much of an elevation gain at all! I need a better internal GPS haha

It's a very gradual ascent! Seems very flat, believe me, I've taken that drive plenty of times and I was convinced it was flat too.

Gotta be that bend after the bridge before the turn to Index lol. So deceptive. Oh well! Still plenty of houses for sale here and I need better neighbors hahaha (pssst...Phil...it's not a swamp here)

It’s interesting because I’ve taken this route a few times as well and it seems deceptive. Apparently even from Sultan to Gold bar (208’), there is a 100’ gain in elevation in just 5 miles and it’s not even noticeable.

It is less deceptive on I-90 though with the climb and descent, even into/after the 405 split.

It usually takes me several weeks to really start feeling the effects of SAD. I remember not this last winter but the one before had a really gloomy dark several week stretch here. I was really ready for the sun by the end of that.

The Skykomish River Valley is fascinating.  Almost no elevation until you get way in there, but it extends so deeply into the mountains it gets considerable continental influence during the winter once you get east of Sultan.

By the time you’re in Gold Bar, it really feels like you’re in the mountains. I remember (many years ago) when I checked elevations and was floored at how low Gold Bar is. The glaciers really carved out that valley. North Bend has the same discrepancy of feeling higher in altitude than it actually is. Ditto for Maple Falls.

Part of it for me is that the mountains I got most used to in early life were in northern New Mexico, and there just wasn’t much glaciation in that area. If you travel into the mountains, you gain significant elevation, even if you follow a river valley.

The 7 day change on global SSTs today shows a profound sharpening of the -PDO signature, and that's after a very low -1.89 for July.  That was the 16th lowest July reading since 1875.  Other years this century that had a very low July PDO were 2008, 2010, and 2011.  All followed by solid to big winters for the Puget Sound region.

And yet this summer was pretty much the complete opposite.   And I suspect this winter will be nothing like what is expected.    Does not mean there won't be some fun... but its probably better to the bet the opposite of what you expect at this point.

I get what you're saying.  I think the piece that kept the PDO low this summer was the strong Pacific High.  That feature has been there all along, but was overpowered by the 4CH until this past week.

In a Nina or neutral year it's fine.

Had to bump this from the October debate yesterday. It's pretty much this.

Looks like another sub-55 low for PDX this morning after a -8F daily departure yesterday. It's been fun watching their average temp for the month plummet since the 16th.

The fact that they are still just a little warmer than the warmest August on record after a week of cool weather says a lot. Good chance the next week takes care of that though. Might still end up in the top five depending on how warm the weekend decides to get.

Those "drab colored" cliffs in Montana look similar to places in central WA... maybe both the result of Missoula Floods?
