In the early 1980s I worked as a research assistant at Lawerence Livermore Labs on the early fusion energy projects. Back then the idea was a plasma contained in a giant magnetic bottle and heated by microwave energy to try and mimic the fusion temperature of the sun. Such enthusiasm by the scientist team. After spending a ton of money, it didn't work. In more recent history the national laboratory has moved on to the laser heating idea. This article heralds a breakthrough moment. The older experiments also praised future "breakthoughs" before finally being abandoned. I learned a lot about microwave heating back then. For now, I wish them luck. I must add that we already have access to the sun's fusion power with the emerging solar panel power industry. The money expended for fusion research is better spent on water resources for the western states.
