You should get your first sub-freezing high this winter some time. Even places like Medford haven't had one since
Jan 2017.

It's already a very unprecedented streak of futility in that department for 5 years now. It's gotta end at some point.

Today's sun angle and daylight duration is like February 28th, the last day of meteorological winter.

It sure would be nice if the 12Z GFS could verify... almost a week with no rain or storms starting late Sunday.

I assume it won't happen, but a full week of sunshine to enjoy the fall colors would be wonderful.     We have had enough rain up here and November is coming up fast.

We’re probably due for some ridging in late October and early November like some others have pointed out. Some of those long range ensemble means look like it anyways.

The aurora in Whatcom County was quite bright when I checked a little after 11:00 pm. No camera and long exposure needed to see it. I rushed in to text a few of my friends and it had faded a lot by the time I went back out to look a few minutes later. Five or ten minutes after that and it became totally invisible to the naked eye. Fun while it lasted, and glad I decided to check that one last time before going to bed.

Unfortunately I was sawing logs by 11 (or at least headed that way).  In all reality, I have too many lights to my immediate north to have any hope of seeing them unless its a major once in a lifetime event.  I need to scout out a dark area that is close by.

Our dahlias escaped... and might be able to make a much longer run now.   They just keep blooming until the first hard freeze.  😀

Yeah, they are a gift that keeps giving.  We have too many plants and have run out of places to put the flowers so their demise is not a real heartbreaker for us.

Euro shows about 3” of rain here by Sunday night gfs only a bit above an inch. Big gap between the two in a short timeframe.

06z EPS didnt back down at all on precip totals for puget sound being in the bulk of the path of moisture when the AR stalls. GFS and Canadian both think shadow or weaker AR overall, i think. Will see what 12z Euro thinks.

00z Euro did seem to be an outlier on that 3 inch precip though. Bet that comes down for 12z.

Colder than it got in most of western Whatcom County. That south-north gradient is a killer.

The benefits of radiational cooling. Makes us look more impressive in the cold department but rarely translates to any significant Arctic airmasses, which tend to stall right around the 45th parallel.

No sub-freezing highs since the 16-17 winter speaks for itself. Also our coldest temp last year being 23F on October 26...no one else has had it that bad in the interior PNW except for maybe Roseburg and Medford.
