519 heights just off the WA Coast at day 9 / 10 on the 0z ECMWF.  Wow!

The GFS and ECMWF agree on an extraordinary pattern developing for this time of year early in week two.  Should be fun to see how the details work out.

Models really want to give at least a portion of the region up north a windstorm in a little over a week.

Pretty crazy finish to the ECMWF.  A big windstorm for some and then heights fall below 540 over SEA with afternoon temps in the upper 40s on day 10.  Looks like a top tier cold October is still on the table.  Not mention active.

Lester certainly takes the cold spot award for Western WA tonight with a current temp of 38 while OLM sits at 54.  Even here it's down to 48 with some benefit of the same dry air seepage that's making Lester so cool.

Could just be an inversion combined with normal emissions from vehicles and industry.

Was thinking that initially but noticed the smoke was extremely dense to the west of Hillsboro and towards the coast range around sunset. Downtown PDX looked pretty clear. The smoke has been drifting east through the evening and tonight. It just literally smells like something burning out there now.

Need this front to come through and mix out the airmass asap.

Yes, they need it more than we do here. It’s not a competition though. The entirety of Oregon and California needs much more rain. Models are looking very promising for the northern half of California and all of Oregon.

Backyard burns. I drove down the Santiam canyon yesterday afternoon and there were hundreds of slash piles burning. The whole canyon was filled with smoke.

Your smoke probably came from the coast range/rural Washington/Yamhill county. Calm down city folkx.

You never see widespread burning like that up here... seems like Oregonians are always burning something (including grass fields) and messing with air quality.  😃

You don’t live in an agricultural area. And there is far less field burning here than there used to be.

But I am sure there is slash burning in logging areas of Western Washington. The burning in the Santiam Canyon was mostly debris piles from wildfire cleanup. Also remember we had a massive damaging ice storm down here. People are still burning debris piles from that. It dried out so early down here we had red flag warnings in mid-April and couldn’t burn anything after that point.

Maybe there is... but the only time I have ever seen it smoky here is from wildfires.    And we have had a couple significant ice storms as well in the last 15 years.

Pretty sure there were several times this summer and over the last few years where people in Oregon were wondering why there was smoke around and it was controlled burns. I remember a couple times this year people freaked out but it was controlled burns with onshore wind so it was allowed IIRC. Definitely seems somewhat common down there.
