Very good points.  As I mentioned earlier the times we really get hit is when a secondary low pinwheels around the parent.  I think Columbus Day may have been an exception to that.

The CDS ejected out of the base of a massive EPAC trough. I think it was kind of a hybrid in that sense, plus it had insane pressure rises on the backside of the warm front which coupled perfectly with the efficient mid fall mixing of the low/mid levels.

The bomb itself couldn't make a windstorm in Portland, but fine it will make a thunderstorm that makes a separate windstorm.

Yeah without sharp pressure rises and/or significant cold/dry advection it’s harder to mix down stronger winds to the surface. Convection is probably the best bet.

Sometimes in WAA regimes we can have a screaming 70+kt LLJ just a few thousand feet off the surface and only 20-30mph will mix down.

That's one thing that's lacking with this is the rapid pressure rises behind the low.  It just moving too slowly.

Pretty impressive stuff headed for SEA and PDX at the same time.  The PDX squall looks tighter and more vicious though.

It's been considerably more impressive than that here.  A few small branches have fallen.

Doesn't sound like the worst way to camp. One of my former neighbors would choose the one day the whole year severe t'storms are developing and didn't look at the forecast. If it hails where you're at better hope it's not big!

A shop near me had a window broken from the wind and another a block or two away had a pot knocked over but the wind has basically died down. This morning we had a few good breezes but nothing that interesting.

Good thing out west, hail rarely gets to damaging proportions.

did this storm get a name?  surprised NWS Seattle didn't name it

We're the only region in the world that doesn't name storms.

Wouldn't shock me though if TWC went and came up with something. Their polar vortex term technically isn't official.

Total bust here. About 10 minutes of gusty conditions and a 2 minute downpour. Overall, quite a calm day. Took in the Portland Japanese Garden this morning without so much as a breeze or a drop of rain. Absolutely gorgeous there. Past peak though.

12Z ECMWF shows low 60s and sunny out here on Halloween.   I think the GFS once showed half a foot of snow in my area that day.

That late month thing is a really tricky one.  I'll be interested to see how it plays out.  The ECMWF did come way down on low temps for many places with that vs previous runs.

it's strange that we don't name the storms

of course the name could not be certain words that are prohibited but a name would be cool

we could reflect back in five, ten, twenty years and refer to the name

Some of the biggies have names.  Columbus Day, Hanukah Eve, Friday the 13th (Jan 1950 Blizzard), etc.

Were those given after the fact though?

Looks like some nice weather evolving for next weekend.

61 here and it's calmed down a lot.

The active radar seems to have some wicked lines out on the coast and south west washington.

Maybe one of those can lift through the central sounds later?

My phone app doesn't show the cold you speak of but sometimes when it updates later in the day it will show what the latest model runs depict.

Snow for thanksgiving would be amazing.

Not the same kind of naming, but yes we have our own unique way around it.

And it's after the storm has already happened.

Or it gets a name when it leaves our region.... as it goes through the Rockies towards the Midwest/Northeast where people actually live (according to East Coast media).

That's now 3 events close to warning criteria, just not the full cigar, or taquito, whatever your poison.
