Some small towns around Deer Park dropped to <-30F. The record low in Spokane is -30F, so lows of <-20 do happen from time to time. February 1996 had a couple <-20F readings. December 2008 was just shy of -20F with a reading of -18F.

KLMT's all time is -25 in Jan 1962, never thought GEG hit colder than this!

Couldn't tell if you meant 02-03 or just lived in the wrong place, right Winter!

Some of the snow event happened down here but never got below zero. Impressive in Spokane considering the elevation.

Coldest day was 24/2.

Most people are split on that event. I'm guessing it didn't get far enough south.

West side Portland Metro was in a blizzard one of those mornings. Bethany Meadows Apts had power bumps. The eeriest sunrise with a dark purple tinge to the sky.

I remember watching NWCN and TWC. All the news people were stationed around Troutdale for maximum dramatic effect. All that cold air in the Gorge was sent from Spokane.😁

According to this map, Helena Mt would almost get their entire years worth of snow in Oct?

They average about 42" of yearly snowfall so yeah that shows more than half their yearly snowfall.

Very unlikely to verify verbatim but you get the idea for the potential with this storm. Big October snows are somewhat common in Montana, just last year Helena saw 25" of snowfall during the month of October.

I remember such big time hype about the 1999-2000 La Niña season…I think it was? Mt Baker got their record snowfall but it was a massive dud in the lowlands.
December 1998 featured a nice little event however. At least up here.

1998-99 was the record winter up there. Over 1,100 inches.

98-99 had a legit high tier Arctic airmass, although I’m pretty sure it was a dry blast in most places (some places got a couple inches of powder).

Obviously an epic mountain winter too. I definitely wouldn’t mind a repeat.

About 45 miles south of PDX it was a huge winter storm. SLE had a 24/19 day. It was the biggest ice storm we ever had in my lifetime until this past February, and plenty of snow fell before it turned to ice.

The Dec 1998 Arctic airmass matched the Dec 1990 blast in California. The only reason it barely shows up in the record books is because they happened on the same days! Most locations were tied with 1990 or 1 or 2F degrees off. Some locations were actually colder in Dec 1998.

January 2004 was also a classic "It'll warm up tomorrow" event – what was supposed to be a 1-2 day snow to freezing rain event turned into a week off school. At one point out in SE Gresham there was a blizzard warning with heavy snow, 40-50mph wind gusts, and a temp hovering around 13F during the day.

Yup, both Jan 2004, Dec 2008 events were just after and before Winter Breaks respectively.
That was what 3 weeks off school?

Peeps were already the worst candy ever invented and lately they've invaded other holidays. That looks like something you might find in a barn.
