I remember September 24, 1985 in the Twin Cities very clearly... watching it snow out my school window in the middle of the afternoon.

This isn’t a complete list of all the other “northern” cities but the one that stood out the most to me is Chicago. I’m actually surprise that they didn’t get their earliest snowfall until 2006. I would assume a lot sooner.

Oct 27, 1971. So no not even close to a September snowfall.

These type of events can still happen! Just 4 years ago now we had a half inch of snow on November 3rd. Was very cool to see.

November makes sense for Minneapolis. Occasionally some of their greatest severe wx events happen at the very tail end of summer. One in particular I remember from 9/21/2005, a large tornado happened pretty close to the mall. Someone still has videos (in 4 parts) of the approaching storm.

Yup. Believe that same year Seattle recorded its 3rd earliest on Nov 3rd or 5th. But we won’t get snow in September though.

Yeah even in the mountains they don’t get snow every year in late September. Had a blast watching it snow at 6400’ near mount bachelor on September 19th this year. That’s fairly early but don’t think that it’s incredibly uncommon for snow in the second half of September above 5000’. I believe on 10/8/2019 there was snow as low as 900’ in the cascades that’s probably about as close as you can get to low elevation snow in September.

Latest Euro weeklies show that a ridgy period is indeed coming to the west for the last third of this month through the first half of November. Setting us up perfectly for a December to remember...😊

will be interesting to see how this SSW coming up effects the weather around here. I’m not an expert on this but having a disruption like this seems like it’ll really increase the odds of getting Arctic air down into the mid latitudes…hopefully on our side of the planet not on Putin’s side.

Cohen’s thoughts and blog on the SSW peaking around October 25. Seems to suggest early SSW’s in Oct/Nov will lead to something very significant during mid-winter. This is quite exciting. Definitely worth the read.

Also this thread regarding weak SSW in Oct/Nov leading to a more significant one later.

From the satellite view I'd say some clouds will be rolling in here later tonight to moderate our temps here in the northern areas of Puget Sound.   My first actual freeze will be delayed I'm afraid.  I'm thinking a low of 34 is in order here.

Yeah, if you look at the map TacomaWaWx pasted about an hour ago it’s pretty clear us northerners are going to get clouded out of a good frost chance tonight.

ECMWF shows the incoming high clouds will hold off until 4 or 5 a.m. across western WA.

Yeah I just looked at it.  Lows in the upper 30’s would mean a pretty early presence of clouds.  It looks like a lot of areas should drop more than that before they move in.

After today my month to date average is 49.7.  That would be cold for an average for the full month of October.

You can just see, feel, and taste it's going to be really cold tonight.  Probably 32 or lower in a lot of places.
