I think Ashland at least has sirens. I liked a local facebook page for Boyd County and they have posted about annual tests for tornado sirens.

A tornado watch in the PNW is an event. All the talking heads on the television freak out. 😂😆 We don't have any sirens here, because tornadoes are so rare. I bet you have some great events this winter. You might do better than all of us.

I've felt a few sprinkles today, but it really is just cloudy with upper 50s right now. Saw 68° in a few eastside spots yesterday.

Only one watch has ever been issued in northwest history (at least since SPC has been keeping records). 5/31/1997 in Eastern WA and NE Oregon.

I keep forgetting was April 5 1972 a cold core event? SPC probably won't issue one in those kinds of environments. May 1997 was a warm core event.

I joined the Army in 1996. I was at Ft Stewart in the spring of 1997. I missed that event. My dad sent me a letter and mentioned it. I missed the only one. I spent my whole childhood hoping for something like that.😂😆

Exactly. It feels to me like a lot of folks in Washington (not all of them, and not everyone on the board) don't have a concept of what it's like down here. I also feel like more Oregonians visit Washington more often than vice versa relative to population.

It's the way it feels to me. Doesn't make it factually correct (usually I'm just misguided or overly use confirmation and/or negativity bias because I've lived a very sad life).

I love Oregon as a vacation destination. Love the Oregon coast, central Oregon, the gorge, the Wallowas. Been to the gorge and the Bend area dozens of times.

As far as weather goes, I live in western Washington and am more interested in what’s happening here. But I enjoy the local observations and photos of interesting weather and nice scenery from all across the pnw.

Looking highly likely the second half of the month will average at least a bit below normal now.  Going to be a solidly cold October.  At this point the models are hinting at the mean trough retrograding in early November which may mean a mild / wet November which would be pretty classic with a Nina.

That late October 2012 trough was sure a beast. Went camping near Trillium Lake by Mt Hood at about 3500’ and several inches of snow fell.

All 12z models on board with a sub 970mb low. That's extremely rare when we're talking 8-9 days out. The westerly jet is no joke and that its so far suppressed south of 45 N means we need to keep a close eye on things late next week.

Agreed. Years back when I still lived in San Jose I was traveling for work in Philly. The 55 year old hotel bar tender had never heard of San Jose. Didn't even know what state it was in. Like what? It's the 10th biggest city in America.

The bigger ones should only get easier IMO.

I remember being one of a few students in one of my classes that could name and locate most of Oregon's Counties. A few students actually didn't know their own county they lived in.

I don’t know what they teach these days at the lower level schools but when I was in the 4th grade, we were already taught all the states + the provinces in Canada and also how to properly pronounce those states/provinces.

We were constantly tested on the states with the teacher providing us “blank states” to fill out.

I’d say it’s D**n useful and one of the lessons that stuck for life.

He also taught us compass directions and how to remember them. “Never Eat Soggy Waffles” — is how I remembered NESW.

Yeah I have to agree…everyone should know where all the states are and what their names are. Amazing how some people are totally uneducated on geography.
