August 2015 Observations and Discussions

My old home town of Sioux Falls South Dakota got absolutely drilled last night. Some parts of town had over 7" of rain in a couple of hours. Check out this newspage for some crazy pics and videos. I know I've seen some other videos out there too that were just as crazy from last night.

James, you must be getting soaked right now.  Your def in the bullseye of this system.  Only if it were snow, ay???

Was just getting on here to say that!!! Yeah, nice steady rain...right in the bullseye. I wont be home til the morning though so I wont be able to check the gauge til then.

Hope to see systems like this this coming Winter!

Those picture and videos from Sioux Falls are extraordinary! Never seen the falls like that before. Usually it's just a series of tranquil waterfalls.

Take care James, I know you've been getting dumped on today.

1-2 outlook for further east.

Geos- It sounds like you're somewhat familiar with Sioux Falls. Did you use to live in Sioux Falls or the area?

I found another story from the local news station that shows more videos and pics that I think are a little better in showing the extent of the flooding. It's crazy to think the Empire Mall was flooding and that HyVee on 49th and Louise I've been to a lot of times and it had several inches of water in the entire store it looks like!

Parts of Iowa are getting it bad today.  Up to 9 inches of rain has fallen north of Ames.  Flash flood warnings have been issued eastward into the Waterloo area.

So far only a couple hundredths of rain. Steady rain taking forever to get in tonight. Probably be 11pm before it starts again.

This month definitely ending below normal too. 7th month below normal this year.

Just read our sunspot count is lower than the Dalton Minimum now. http://iceagenow.info/2015/08/sunspot-count-now-lower-than-during-the-dalton-minimum/

1.00" here exactly overnight. A damp and cool morning. Feels nice though before the heat returns.

Wet day with low ceilings. Only 66° so far today. Reminds me of a mid Autumn day - little bit too humid though.

I ended with 3.98". Yup just a ways south of me there were 8-9" reports! Wish this system was part of the new LRC!

In September, we begin the slow transition into the new LRC pattern.  It'll be interesting to see how this all evolves into an interesting season.  The mature El Nino vs "The Blob" will likely will begin to interact more notably as the season variations begin up north next month.  Hope we will be able to track frequent phased systems this season.

Really fogged up here in the last hour. Been in the 60s for the last 30 hours or so with this marine air in place.

There's definitely smoke in the area tonight. I saw it at sunset and I think I can smell it in the air as well.

As we begin a long period of very warm late Summer weather, Arctic temps are tanking and dipping below normal.  In fact, the temps are colder at this same time of the year than the previous 2 year's.

During 2014 & 2013, temps began to average above normal from this point forward.  What does this mean going forward???  Let's see what happens over the coming weeks.  If there is more colder air bottled up north, I think as we head into Sept-Oct, Autumn cold fronts may pack more of a punch.  More Snow and Ice in the Arctic regions, may translate to a faster snow cover.

Seeing sun today, but through hazy, smoky skies again. Moderately humid with an onshore breeze still.

We definitely have smoke in the air today.  The skies remind me of how smoky it was during the 4th of July up in Wisco.

ORD will average out 1.3F below normal for meteorological Summer.  Can't believe today is the last day of August already...this Summer flew by way to fast.

Sunset was earlier than normal today due to the smoke. Shadows were less discernible than normal due to light being scattered by the atmospheric particulate.

High of 78°. Btw: fog was ridiculous dense last night along the ground. < 100 foot visibility easy.

Well summer is over in less than 3 hours. Officially here the summer was -2.46° from normal. August was -1.76° from normal.

Well that's what happens when you have a cold winter and spring that keeps the lake temperatures below normal!

High Plains Regional Climate Center redid there site.

Last 60 days at least. New 90 day (seasonal) will come out tomorrow. You're not doing to bad out there!
