Yeah... but now we are in southerly flow which will turn easterly again tomorrow.   Southerly flow is pretty hostile in terms of freezing temps too.

Well that was perfect timing today! Got home from a long dentist appointment at noon and did a full mow and roof blow off…Finished right when the rain started at 2pm! Love it when a plan comes together!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I loved and hated the east wind the 5 years I lived in Troutdale.   It totally destroyed so many snow event for me at the same time prolonged the cold periods while the rest of the PDX area was roasting!   Love hate relationship

Indeed.  My saying for it here is...less is more.  When it just seeps in it can do great things for us.  The other time it works is if it blasts in for a while and then quits when the moisture arrives.  The most satisfying moment last February was when the easterly breeze held on just enough to keep us below freezing after the snowstorm while places just west of here got to nearly 40 and everything turned to mush.  At that same time we got 2 inches of snow from an Arctic boundary that set up here.  There is often a consolation prize involved with these things.

Yeah... it can definitely get to be too much.  Particularly down there in the Gorge.    Sort of the like the Fraser outflow in Whatcom County.   It would suck to have all your snow blown away.   😀

My roof blow off was done by Mother Nature.  One thing I like about the east wind in the fall.

Overall a sh*t tree for fall color.    Decent right now... but still nowhere close to the show other trees around here can put on.

The blizzard like conditions I did enjoy but yes….my snow ended up somewhere around I-205 along with my trash cans and anything else not tied down

On another note....has anyone noticed the insane amount of fir needles that have fallen this year.  It's just plain ridiculous here.  Two more odd ones is there were almost no garden spiders this year, and the plague of small ants we've had the last several years simply vanished just after the June heatwave.  Kind of an interesting year.

With them it totally depends on the year.  Some years they turn really nice.  I really grew to appreciate them when I lived in Cle Elum for a couple of years.  Over there they turn brilliant nearly every year.

She certainly worked out in December 2005.  Dry air flooding in from the east is what made that snowfall work.  I've also talked about January 1, 2004 a few times.

A really interesting situation happened in January 1977 also.  Landsburg and places around here had just the right amount of seepage to make that a much colder month here than pretty much anywhere else in Western WA.  Landsburg had a monthly average of 32 that month, while SEA was just a tad below normal.

Noooo... I wouldn't want to give up the east wind here.   It frequently brings dry air and sunshine in the cold season and also brings snow.   Its my favorite aspect of the climate here from October-March.

Anything that got burned in the heat wave is probably dropping now if it hasn’t yet

It wore me down in Troutdale….. fun at first but as after 5 years it was just to much for me.  Now, SE PDX where I go quite often (just west of I-205) it’s just the right mix of east winds there.  Perfect location for those snow and ice events.

1937-38 through 1945-46 was horrendous.  The only thing worth a D**n in there was January 1943.

As for your second point....as long as we get a good snow going into the cold.

1938 had a big flood with the Santa Ana River and washed out the bridge to West Riverside. My grandfather was living there at the time and saved two pieces of the bridge.

They are a "shitt tree." Mine never turn until mid November and that is just an ugly brown.

The other crap that falls from them during the Spring and early Summer, not to mention the large branches that fall during the heat of Summer, I want them all gone

A lot of needles were singed in the heat. Became very noticeable on the hemlocks and fir trees. Large streaks of dead brown needles that are ripe to fly off as we head into winter.

No doubt about that whatsoever.  1896, 1955, and 1985 were as real as it gets.  A number of other ones have had much shorter, but sharp events as well.

They are really nice up here this year.  Only a couple of times I've seen them like this on the West Side.

I think Troutdale would be too much for me too.  They can get some epic ice storms, but I'm not a fan of those.  I can only imagine what that place was like in January 1862 though.  That would have been something to see!  Vancouver was incredible enough with their 21 degree monthly average temp.

One interesting fact I found out about cottonwoods is they use the cellulose from the trees to make some of the finest paper available.  I didn't realize they had some commercial value until then.
