I agree with others we've also had an insane amount of fir/pine needles. I have raked and swept up over a dozen piles of them from just one tree and there are more. We also have had a total lack of garden spiders I've seen two and usually in September-October we have to contend with a dozen or more. I guess that's from the heatwave then. Oh and east winds. Yeah. Without east winds PDX simply would have few and very brief snow events. I love my east winds.

It's a bit of a different thing down there.  Up here it has more of a down sloping aspect to it.  Under the right conditions though it can have the same effect as Portland.

So into stats that you cheer for cold rain... and yet you want to move because of too much cold rain here.  Quite the conflict.   😀

One interesting fact I found out about cottonwoods is they use the cellulose from the trees to make some of the finest paper available.  I didn't realize they had some commercial value until then.

Same reason they have been genetically modified and raised on plantations. They grow fast and are easily replenished.

Downside is they require a lot of water and have not yet become economically viable.

There was a plantation just off I84 in eastern oregon that was harvested but has since been plowed under

My theory with the cottonwood and I can be completely bullshiiit here because I know absolutely nothing about trees but due to the extreme this pass June  + several more warm spells + long duration of dryness caused these trees to go into hyperdrive in order to survive so they have to draw more moisture up from the ground than usual. Couple then with the fact we then have extremely wet/cool month kinda help these trees color up nicely in the fall. Enough sunshine then wet/cool. The cool part seems to be the biggest factor though.

and yes, the cottonwoods do actually look decent this year compare to previous.

Yeah... that is probably why I love the east wind here.   Down there it's stronger and colder.   It often helps up here when it counts for snow though.

I can’t imagine living in some of the spots in the western gorge. There are quite a few residences up in the Cape Horn area that can easily see 50+ mph gusts for 7-10 day stretches once any kind of cold pool becomes established. Some years are worse than others but that would take a lot of getting used to.

It's fun when it's gusting 45mph+ for a week :D

Two pictures I’ve been meaning to post here for some time. These are aftermath of the December 1996 snowstorms at about 300 feet elevation in Shoreline, WA (just north of Seattle). Conditions when these were taken was moderate to heavy rain and a temperature of about 50°F, so there had been significant melting and compaction by this time. (Maximum snow depth happened during the hours of darkness.)

I don't get very many garden spiders, but I do get these bastards inside my home on occasion. For scale, that's a quarter.

Giant house spiders... You have Great Britain cargo ships in the 1800s to thank for those! :)

Yeah those spiders I hate. I haven't had any inside my house that size, but they do like to build their homes behind the planter box outside. Last year there were far more of them. Kill them! Kill them all!

That's intense! One of those is going to wander in eventually if these zonal patterns keep repeating themselves.
