Yeah the cold troughs that get to us in the PNW typically start east of Alaska.

Long time lurker, first time poster.  Figured it was a good time to jump in.  I also bought a snow blower last week. ((live in E WA by way of CA and previously the east coast (SC,TN, GA and NH) and no not military before you ask, just a nomad by choice)) so you can blame me for the torch-y ness lately

😆

Anyway here for the mood swings, model hugging, know it alls, dry humorists, and over all wx dorkiness.  Hoping to get buried (in Dec and Jan)

cheers

Welcome, not a lot of us here living east of the Cascades.  Where at?

Most of the time yes.  But sometimes it can come from Alaska and NW Canada, like 1989.  Ryan Maue says that this cold in Alaska will lead to a major arctic outbreak somewhere in the U.S. after that.

Well even 1989 came from the Yukon/N-Canada, not directly out of Alaska. But I understand the gist of what you’re saying.

It can/has happened where a vortex up there gets dislodged in a high amplitude regime. But that’s not the way it usually happens, especially nowadays with the modern era general circulation.

Looks OK for Whistler . . .

Little doubt the mountains will have very little snowpack through at least December 5th. Have a feeling they will probably catch up fairly quickly after that though.

I don't think we're prepared for what models are going to look like in 3-4 days. MBG

Probably a rugpull. It's clown range.

As long as we can peel off those ugly 7000-8000' snow levels forecast in the Cascades and replace them with some much more visually appealing 2000-3000' levels, I'm satisfied for the moment.

Really hope the pattern actually does change in the near future. Been the worst (driest) fall I've ever seen here...still no measurable snow for Denver and the ski resorts aren't doing much better.

2008 and 2016 were pretty bland falls for you guys, too.
