British Columbia Flooding

Recommended Posts

The catastrophic flooding in British Columbia is the direct result of global warming. While the powerful AR of Oct 24 started the floods by saturating the ground and filling every reservoir, continued heavy rain in November has created a disaster. The warm temperatures disallowed the precipitation to fall as snow and be stored in the snowpack. In previous years, the snow line of the coastal mountains might be as low as 2000 feet. Now the sticking and staying snow line is between 3500 and 4000. Only the highest peaks are storing snow. The run off from all that extra terrain has never been seen before. Like the rest of the Western coast of North America, winter is the time for the heaviest rainfall.

There is the point that 1861 had worse flooding just to the south in Oregon in the autumn.  Led to the most brutal winter on record for the NW.

That's not true about where the sticking snow line is either.  I've lived in the NW my entire life and the mountains are just as snowy now as they were 50 years ago.  The recent retreat of some glaciers has been due to the summers becoming warmer which may be a cyclical occurrence.

Sad, flooding to the north. Drought to the south.

There was a big rain a few weeks back in northern CA though.
