12/10 to 12/11 Upper Midwest Snow Storm

The Winter Weather Advisory was expanded southward this afternoon. Drizzle should turn to snow this evening, posing possible travel hazards for more southern areas like Omaha and Interstate 80. Snow should fall in Lincoln as well, but forecast totals are lower than in Omaha.

CHEERS! to more bomb storms throughout the winter..

DTX update..

Quote

Good agreement with the mass fields/track of the max 500 MB 6h
height fall center (170 M) tracking through northern Lower Michigan,
with just some subtle and important issues with the timing/phasing
of the northern Stream trough tracking through northern Ontario and
corresponding rapid deepening of the low during Saturday. Bulk of
high resolution solutions (NAM/ARW) showing intense strengthening,
~10 MB in 6-8 hours (10-18z Saturday), with the low likely at or
below 980 MB by 18z Saturday (even the UKMET has come around).

There are some 8-12" spotter reports under the stalled heavy band on the south side of the metro.

(Blowing the dust off my account)…what’s up everyone? It’s been one hell of a year and I’m glad it’s almost over. Had a biking accident in Alaska while on vacation in July. Broke 6 ribs and snapped my right collarbone in half. Just haven’t been myself since then…

Kinda tough to get super excited about snow that will likely all melt my midweek, but it’s definitely raking out there. Sitting on the northern fringe of that monster band. 4.5” down already. I think we’ll hit at least 7” easily. More than that depends on any convective banding that might pop back up. It’s a beautiful scene out there though!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Sucks to hear.  Hope you are on the mend.  Nice storm.  Sitting at about 4 here might squeak another 4 out of it.  I think I saw a 14 inch spot in the south metro.  Some one will break 18 up there.

Thanks.  I’m on the mend, but it’s been rough. One thing is for sure…most models absolutely nailed where that band was going to set up. We need to remember this one for all the times the models don’t do well.

Great to see you in here! And very sorry about your biking situation. That's a crazy story. Glad you are getting back to yourself!

Brighter returns now shifting back to the northwest. Not as intense as the one earlier that smashed the south metro but it’s snowing hard out there. I’ll hit at least 8” here based on current radar.

MPX with a winter storm warning update for the ages:

”...INCREDIBLE SNOWFALL AMOUNTS CONTINUE TO PILE UP THIS EVENING...

Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5
inches. Storm total accumulations of 18 to 21 inches are
possible in parts of the southern and eastern Twin Cities
Metro. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.”

It appears Creighton University's live webcam is gone from their site.  :(  I have often checked that video when snow is moving through Omaha.

There you are!  Glad to see you back in the saddle, but more importantly, it's good to hear that your doing better after a hellova accident.  Health is #1 in my book and there is nothing more important other than family.  I heard it takes a very long time to heal a collarbone....but to have your ribs also broken must have been awful . In any event, congrats on the 1st big snow of the season.  I always enjoy looking at your winter photos.

This storm system is showing some crazy dynamics...currently right over RFD at 990mb and dropping...

Those are some insane snowfall totals across the south side metro of MSP.  Wild stuff!  What a way to kick off the winter season with a likely record smashing snowfall.

This storm reminds me of the Nov 17th, 2013 severe wx outbreak that hit the Lower Lakes/MW/OHV region...I'm really worried about next years Spring/Severe Wx season. If we see a pattern like this where clashing air masses set up then things will get ugly.  The system back in 2013 had a massive TOR outbreak and this current storm is certainly showing up to that caliber.
