12/10 to 12/11 Upper Midwest Snow Storm

While I was upstairs I began to hear a “roaring” sound from the wind blowing the trees and in a sudden moments time, the strongest wind gusts just slammed through as the CF approached.   Holy friggin’ crap what a wild experience.  The roaring sound is what was creepy.  This had to have been the strongest non thunderstorm winds I’ve seen in a long time.  I’m really curious what the official reports are this morning.  I think they were easily over 50mph.

This storm reminds me of the Nov 17th, 2013 severe wx outbreak that hit the Lower Lakes/MW/OHV region...I'm really worried about next years Spring/Severe Wx season. If we see a pattern like this where clashing air masses set up then things will get ugly.  The system back in 2013 had a massive TOR outbreak and this current storm is certainly showing up to that caliber.

Kentucky[edit]

Multiple reports from various sources stated that the city of Mayfield suffered catastrophic damage. Emergency broadcast systems across the town lost signal.[citation needed] It was reported that about 110 people were trapped at a candle factory when the tornado hit.[10] The Governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, has declared a State of emergency for parts of Western Kentucky.[11] Serious damage occurred to several structures in the city's court square, including the city hall.[12] Beshear stated that over 50 people died in the city during a live call with WLKY.[5]

At Madisonville, a train derailed but no casualties were resulted.[13]

In Trigg County, over 14,000 residents were left without power.[14]

Significant storm damage was reported in Bowling Green, prompting Western Kentucky University to cancel commencement ceremonies on the coming Saturday, due to the campus losing power. No injuries were reported in the city.[10]

Tennessee[edit]

Three deaths; two in Obion County and one in Lake County were confirmed by officials at the Obion County Emergency Management and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.[15][16] Multiple serious injuries were also reported at a mobile home park in Samburg and at a resort.[17]

Illinois[edit]

According to Edwardsville police, at least two people died during the collapse of an Amazon warehouse in the town.[18] Between 50 and 100 people were also trapped in the intact remnants of the warehouse;[19] about 30 people were brought to the Pontoon Beach police station in a bus for further evaluation.[10] One person was air-flown via helicopter to a hospital.[18] The tornado blew the roof of the building off, and a long wall also collapsed.[10]

Arkansas[edit]

The Monette Manor nursing home in Monette was struck by a tornado, causing the death of one person and trapping twenty others.[10] Five people were reported seriously injured.[10] A nursing home in the city of Trumann was damaged, but nobody was injured; the building was being evacuated before the tornado struck.[10]

Missouri[edit]

In St. Charles County, Missouri, one person died and two more were injured due to building collapses. The tornado touched down near Missouri Route 94 in Defiance before barreling into town.[10][20]

I also posted this in the December obversions thread but as this was part of this system I will also post it here.

After a high of 58 here before the cold front came thru there is now a rain/snow mix falling here with a temperature of 36. That is a drop of 22° after sun rise. The next week looks to be almost spring like with forecast highs in the 40's and maybe a 60° day for good measure. For anyone keeping track the recorded high so far at Grand Rapids of 57 would be the 3rd warmest for any December 11th the record is 63 in 1949 and it was 58 in 1979 and 1899. The current forecast high of 61 for next Wednesday would be a record for that day as the current record is 60 set in 2015.

I drove up to Vadnais Heights early this afternoon. I35 was dry. Saw a semi jack knifed and another that was being pulled out. Surprised I didn't see more honestly. Saw a report of 9.5" in St Paul. I'm only 5 miles from there so that's prolly close to what we got here. Sure looks like it!

Back in Iowa I looked out during the night and it was snowing hard. Looked like a couple inches when I went out this morning. There was a 3" report just to my east. The trees were covered in ice and making cracking noises with the wind. My parents lossesd power for several hours from the strong wind and coating of ice on the power lines. Definitely an impactful storm in my area as well.

Watching the Tornado coverage right now. Completely devastating.

Just checked and the peak wind gusts around the area:

ORD: 59mph

DuPage: 60mph

MDW: 64mph

ORD picked up 0.84" of rainfall which is the most precip in over a month.  Many places locally picked up between 1-2"+ of soaking rains from embedded heavy thunderstorms on Friday night.  It was quite the eventful evening and felt spring-like in early DEC.

I see DTW also hit 64 mph, while (just 7 mi N) Canton apparently had just a gentle breeze, lol.

@St Paul Storm, iirc, you live on the NE side of St Paul?  Looks like the winner so far is just E of St Paul with 21"!  My goodness, that must have been an amazing weenie band yesterday.

I live about 4 miles northeast of downtown St Paul. I took measurements in 3 different spots and ended up with an average of about 10.5”. Lost a few inches already, but holding on quite well. Tomorrow and Wed will be the real test to see if we’ll have a white Christmas.
