PNW December 2021 Obs - Pt 3 - No Winter For Low Lands

Recommended Posts

People haven't posted this in a while... This is 8-14 days, so after a lot of potential cold/snow happens, most of these were decent. Maybe not top tier events, but good events.

I looked at that yesterday. A new one is released around noon today.

PNA <-3 for the whole run. The EPO rises above 0 around January 1st on this run.

The op shows the NAO staying sub -1 through the entire run though.

The trend toward the end of the EPS is unmistakable for a resetting and reamp of the block.  We could be looking at one of the great sustained cold waves coming up.

Arlington has a good chance to join them as well.  It usually runs close to Olympia in these situations,

48/45 today so far.   Does anyone know how to stop from double spacing on here?

I didn't include them because I'm expecting to much wind but ya never know. Probably be close.

True. The point where it really starts changing is about 5 above. At my cabin I couldn't feel a difference between 5 below and 15 below. Massive difference between 5 above and ten below.

Truly amazing to see a sharpening trough on an ensemble mean that far out.  Must be a very strong signal.

Oh yeah, the wind is the biggest wild card. Calm winds make it much more tolerable. A breeze or a strong wind can make it completely intolerable.

Car theft is actually quite common during these Arctic blasts as well. People warms up their cars, leaves to go into the house without locking the doors…. Comes out to only see their car gone.

New question for me is “will we be playing hockey from the east shore of lake tapps in Jan!”

Some places in Puget sound and many lakes will freeze over. Considering high temps will be in the low to mid 20s for several days in a tow

Back in December 2008, we had a storm that dropped 24-40 inches of snow. I missed work on that day.

that's nuts, I'm so use to the little nickel and dimers we usually get.  I think the most ive measured IMBY in 4 winters here is 11" in 2019

One thing I really like is how the real push of Arctic air gets hung up for a couple of days.  That is fraught with snow potential for the Puget Sound region.  I'm going to take a stab and go with widespread 4 to 6 inch accumulations for the Central Puget Sound.  Some areas will probably have more.  The models seem to be consistent on big snowfall for Mossman.

I say yes.  I think Green Lake in Seattle is a shoe in.  The million dollar question is can we pull off freezing Lake Union.  That would be a true jaw dropper.  It has happened before.

Interesting analog list. Nice to see January 2007 on there. Dewey mentioned it the other day. Most of these were very good, but not top tier events.

One day or over a 2-3 day period? That's crazy. December 2008 I don't think produced as much as 2010 in southern Oregon.

I am getting the same feeling... seems like situation ripe for c-zones.

Yeah, we can get 12+ inch snowfalls sometimes but not with the upcoming pattern.

How many times have you experienced one?

So far just once in my life. lol

I remember 2008 fondly and have read plenty of literature about 1950.

What was 1969 like?
