PNW December 2021 Obs - A December for Despair and Disappointment

Recommended Posts

35* (FedWay) dp 33-36 range

Going to enjoy celebrating Christmas here in PDX as long as I can keeping and eye on things as they unfold.   Still plan on heading north around 7 and hopefully none event for snow/ice on I-5.

looks like the cold stuff is still hung up near the boarder or just south a bit. Cheers that we all see snow from this event in respectable amounts!  Current dp observation map attached

Was driving home to Renton from samammish at about 8 when my car said 37 on I90 and it was pouring. I was very very close to taking the long way over lakemont to see if it was snowing at the top.

Haha I ended up doing the same thing driving the family home last night. Took lakemont to the Renton highlands.  I didn’t go up cougar mountain though but have taken the kids up a few times in the past week. All the way to park at the very top and played in the snow.

Yep one of the most exciting yet painstaking moments is watching/waiting for the colder air to push south through the PS.  Always takes longer than we think/want it to.

Showers have been breaking up and going directly on either side of me most of the night and then reforming. Kind of annoying but oh well, I'm not too worried at this point. Tonight/tomorrow is main action anyways.

I'm one of the lucky ones whose kids let him sleep in on Christmas morning. Pretty sure we were usually done opening gifts by this time when I was a kid. Mine are still asleep.

Anyway, just went to start the coffee and check outside. Light snow, but no new accumulation since last night. 25° and the outflow is ripping. Hope this isn't one of those times when the icy wind eats up all my snow. The Fraser giveth and the Fraser taketh away.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Merry Christmas from the GFS!

This is the peak snow depth in PDX for the weekend event as per the 06z GFS. Shadowed to death. GFS also took away the Tuesday storm and the Thursday event will be mixed with rain here.  FWIW the 12z ICON brings the Tuesday event back. Seems models are still not really coming to a clear consensus on that but my gut feeling is that precip will come in further inland and further north than currently modeled.

I'm right on the boundary of the arctic air again. I've known from previous storms that I'm not in path of the outflow, but I always hope that it will sag a little south like it did last night. Snow currently in Anacortes, but here, after hovering around freezing for most of the night with northerly wind the southerlies broke through. Just a shame to have precipitation training over me with just a couple miles separating me from the snow.

Looking forward to cooler temperatures later in the day and hopefully some snow!

In the snow shadow here, but so glad to gear some are waking up to a white Christmas. Tonight and tomorrow’s snowfall will be a great “present” from mother nature.

Wishing you all and your families good health and happiness.

Yeah Tacoma’s in a decent spot with SW flow. Too bad it’s not going to be cold enough for stickage until later this afternoon but we will probably do just fine.

Starting to stick to the grass but not gonna amount to much until it gets colder.

Merry Christmas!

No snow here, at least by the time I went to bed, it was still rain. Now it's just dry and chilly! All the same, my parents are giving me a ride to Christmas morning at my brother's place in Bothell, since they have 4WD and I don't - who knows what will happen by tonight.

Best wishes to all, and I wish you all a load of snow! 😀

Merry Christmas everyone.

I spoke too soon. Light snow has turned into a snowglobe.

(Kids still asleep at 8:15, though).

You have to be the only person rooting against snow.  I cannot join your crusade.

Bring on the snow!
