PNW December 2021 Obs - A December for Despair and Disappointment

Bummer...sorry to hear about that. Somehow my area managed quite well with this and it almost never works out this way with cold onshore flow. Hoping that Tuesday system can get it done to get more consistent snow coverage across the region.

Yeah it's been training in that line about 15 miles south of the river. The north Portland to Kalama stretch is where the shadow really set up. Don't have much faith it'll change today, but an inch or so on Tuesday would be nice.

Looks like it's going to be a classic cold/snowy New Years Eve.  Many of our great winters have a white New Years.

Meanwhile....Can't wait for the snow to commence here this morning.  Looking epic on the radar.  It seems like many of us have discussed the models usually underdoing snowfall for the Central Puget Sound with Fraser River blasts.

You were right Jim, we both knew there would be surprises with this. Your forecast talent for Fraser river blasts in western Washington probably exceed most if not all the pro Mets around here.

It is so awesome to see the entire NW and mountain regions getting slammed with so much snow. Very much needed for the drought stricken areas.

This is the kind of winter that has been talked about a lot on here.  And here it is!

Lots of potential for more snow on Tue/Wed. Moisture seems to always make it further North than modeled.

Wow, even in this shadow it's snowing somewhat significantly ty. Can't imagine the rates if this extends up to Seattle

Radar is underselling. Still snowing lightly here in the middle of the dead zone.

This. Seems to be a decent snow rate where radar says there's nothing.

Already can see the dryer air killing the radar north of Seattle.  I don't see how this will last through the afternoon north of tacoma.

I guess all we can do is trust what the models are showing now.  The moisture being kicked up by the low is exerting considerable force south of the Arctic front right now.  That could keep it going for a good while between Seattle and Tacoma.

Think of the center of the low as a giant clock that rotates counter clockwise. While the low was off to our NNW all day, we have been 5 o'clock. At that time, the hand of the clock steers the showers nearly due East and the Olympics ate all our moisture. Now that the low is moving more to the South, we are moving toward 4 on the clock and the showers will be moving NE and we won't be shadowed. Once it's due West of us, they will move nearly straight North up the Sound and this should fire up some decent convergence.

And it did awesome snow this morning! I too panic too early.

Woke up to 5" in Corvallis.  Exceeding expectations...

So rare to see so many areas get snow with the same event.  This is a beast!

Seems like it has stalled in this area for the past little bit.

Still agonizingly close but just not quite there.

I've seen definite progress on the radar that I use.  Very soon now.

I don't know where in North Seattle you are, but my North Seattle has 5+ inches 😂

This is a classic arctic front set up... that is related to upslope with north winds against the hills to the east and south of the Puget Sound.    This is the situation in which Issaquah gets way more than North Bend that I mentioned yesterday.

Down to a flurry now with powdery tufts of roof snow blowing away in gusts from the NNW. Also coming from the NNW are darkened stratocumulus clouds bullied by the Fraser outflow. Tilt 4 at the KATX radar shows promise of another band coming in from the west but I’m not holding my breath.

25/24 here.

Snowy! 🥶 This would rival December 2008 if that verifies.

Would be incredibly fun but seeing how this is going so far even a quarter of what this shows would be great.
