PNW December 2021 Obs - A December for Despair and Disappointment

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get that warm on Thursday. Arctic air always has a tough time getting scoured out.

Yeah... and its a short window before the cold air gets entrenched again.   Very much doubt Thursday gets that warm.    Seriously impressive cold stretch and happening over the Holidays during the shortest days of the year.

Up to about 10" of snow here in Nanoose and still getting some light Strait effect stuff at 21F. Looks like it's snowing in Victoria now as well. My weather station there has it at 18F now in the middle of the day. Easily the coldest it's got since I installed the station 6 years ago. This is some top tier cold.

Not too often you get a weeklong streak of big snow and cold lining up perfectly at the end of December. We will be talking about December 2021 for a long time. Dewey saw it coming for like a year.

Looks like precipitation is starting to fade in the north. Nothing over me on radar currently, but light snow gently floating down. Euro and GFS have more snow around up here until 4 p.m., but I don't really see where it's going to come from.

Hard to find the right words right now. Moderate snow falling and continuing to accumulate and backfill. Upwards of half a foot on the ground at this time. 23/22

Yeah, this would have been great when it was 29 this morning. Unfortunately just a dusting again though, probably gotta wait until after 3pm to have much of a shot again at any real accumulations.

It's looking like weak deformation on Monday night and Tuesday morning now, with some mixing out on Tuesday afternoon as the little system comes ashore. Probably anywhere from a dusting to 3". Would hedge towards the lower end of that range. Gorge outflow doesn't look like it'll be any kind of a factor with this event.

The GFS was awful for folks north of the Columbia River.

Not a new low. This is the mid-level circulation within the 500mb longwave trough.

The hi-res models don't really agree with that though, best dynamics should be with the deformation a little ENE of the low. Actually looks like Tuesday will turn to a mix at least from Salem-south. Gradients go southerly again and there won't exactly be a deep reservoir of arctic air to erode down this way.

Maybe a little mix on TWL's foot of snow.

Portlanders have the right to complain about snow totals. The roads were clear through the gorge with my spouse driving, except for a short stretch right before Hood River. The west gorge even had very little snow on the ground and grass. They were pinpointed to be winners all weekend by NWS Portland.

Portland got blasted with the snow event in February, while everyone south got either a devastating ice storm or rain. So you can't feel too bad.
