Yeah, December 2019 was a torch fest. Parts of September and October were colder and snowier. Makes no sense.

November is a tough customer too. I had a stretch of 3 Novembers back to back all feature some kind of cold spell and they were all warm. I give 2016 a pass because it was seriously raining pretty good in southern Oregon that year.

Me and my brother we're talking about the last few years and the extreme weather events. Something has definitely shifted and we've really had some extreme cold and heavy snow events the last few years.  My average snow here the last 3 years is about 30 inches. Pretty impressive for the lowlands of western Washington.

Yeah.  We haven't had a total loser since 2015-16.  Nice run for sure.

Can you imagine how much snow you must have had in the 1880s and 1890s though.  From what I've been able to piece together the Seattle area averaged 25 inches per winter in that 20 year period.  Just boggles my mind.

Indeed.  Then we have cold trough a couple days after.  People will be surprised how low the first third of the month will average.

Certainly looks like the approaches to the passes and the Gorge were huge winners last night.  Not shocking when looking at how cold Central WA was yesterday and last night.  Some real cold to work with.  I just barely escaped ZR here.  It dropped to 32 on the nose and stopped falling.

Flat out crazy year.  I really think there is something to this solar grand minimum thing.  It seems to have thrown us into a much more perturbed regime.

Will be interesting to see how things evolve over the next few decades. There's no consensus on how global warming is supposed to affect the frequency of blocking patterns.

I would imagine there was 6 or 7 feet around the canal in 1880, hard to imagine but probably true. If what happened here in February 2019 was more widespread like 2-3 feet region wide it'd be a national disaster area. After 2019 I'm a believer that extreme events can still happen in winter here.  This winter is far from done.

Power is back at lake cushman. Witnessed a devastating winter storm yesterday and last night. 12-14” of heavy wet snow fell taking out trees, power lines and making the main county road impassable. The sound of cracking trees and branches reminded me of some of the nastiest ice storms I’ve witnessed. To make matters worst we have had to dig out about 800 feet of concrete sludge. All in all likely the top winter storm I have witnessed with temps steady at 32 with snowfall rates reaching 2” per hour for 4-5 hours straight. Now some snow porn

I was hoping you would check in.  I used to live up there and that area can flat out get crazy. In 2012 we got 23 inches one night from 9pm to 7am. There was 35 on the ground. What is the total depth?

Looks like a fair shot at another sub 40 here today.  Only 36.7 here right now.  The easterly component to the surface pressure gradient just kills the south winds when you get east of the Sound.

Gorgeous.  Still a lot of cold air for us to deal with.  It fascinating to watch how low that illumination is from the sun.
