****'s gonna flip on a dime once the calendar switches to February. This cold February phenomena is baffling. I have no earthly idea why (even when factoring out AGW warming) 1980-2022 climo has hated January and loved February so, so much...

The last FOUR years, starting 2018, have had Feb come in colder than Jan. By a ruthless margin. Wild. Feb 2019 came in at a savage 36.7°F, just 1.1°F warmer than the all time coldest Feb in 1956, and 8.3°F colder than January.

1929 and 1936 were both colder than 1956, but the SEA records only go back to 1945 so you're right there.

Death To Warm Anomalies!

Winter 2023-24 stats

Total Snowfall = 1.0"

Day with 1" or more snow depth = 1

Total Hail = 0.0

Total Ice = 0.2

Coldest Low = 13

Lows 32 or below = 45

Highs 32 or below = 3

Lows 20 or below = 3

Highs 40 or below = 9

“Something” could mean lots of things!   Unfortunately professor Dewey is not on board yet though.

Let me clarify... I think something wintry is coming.  👍

But with Matt clearly not on board... I am not as sure about the magnitude as I was in December.   That dude seems to have a non-biased crystal ball.

Tim, you have 1 week, then you're off to Hawaii for a full month. We can't waste any opportunities throughout February and our best chance is if you're a long, long D**n ways away. Enjoy and ALOHA!

This made me genuinely laugh out loud last night.   😀

And I have some good news for you on this front... my wife did book a week in Palm Springs for us during the second week of February.    Its still tentative though based on health issues with her parents and how strict they are with COVID rules down there and all of the airline issues lately.    But hopefully we will be able to make a big winter event happen up here again.   👍

I think it’ll probably snow here. Below 1000’, unlikely.

The last two GFS ensembles were a bit of a step back. Though I hear the EPS was good. We will be holding our breath waiting for the weeklies.

Nice! Do you know what the average for a winter is there? Growing up my Dad said it snowed every winter, but he said it wasn't a snowy climate. Said he only had school canceled twice, once due to a very large snowstorm, the other because it was extremely cold.

I'm seeing just over a foot for Ashland annually, but cities in central Kentucky are closer to 20" to 2'. Some daily record snowfalls in eastern KY are around a foot.

So far I haven't seen legitimately heavy snowfall rates with the standards I had before coming here. I agree on the statement that its not really a snowy climate, we don't go more than a few days with snow cover. But it does get icy here in this part of the US. It is comparably more difficult to jaunt around in the snow one time I tried to get pictures around the park down the street.

It must have been 1963 he was talking about for the cold (He would have been in 4th grade.). Looks like Ashland hit -15 a couple times that month.

The coldest January on record was 1977 it looks like, head and shoulders above any other month for cold.

About a foot seems reasonable. Down on the river there elevation may play a factor, not sure. Some places further south are probably a little higher up. January 2014 was a very cold recent January. Colder than any month they had when my Dad was growing up...

Last winter there was an "icestorm" that knocked some rural parts of Boyd (and surrounding areas) for several days. I doubt it was because of the snow since locals here in Ashland do reference bigger storms some years ago. But there are certainly a few differences that I'll have to get used to over here, maybe some power outages throughout the year.

The only times I'd lose power in Klamath Falls was if lightning struck really close to the house. Even when I had 2 feet of snow on the ground and temperatures of -19 I had power and not even any noticeable interruptions with connection or phone.

It's a much colder winter time climate than the Western Lowlands though.

Looking at the EPS meteograms again it appears some locations could easily pull off 10 to 12 mins of freezing or below over the next 2 weeks.  The advantage of going into a cold wave with a retrograding ridge.

I would hope so. I'm only at 17 on the winter so far, more than half of which were associated with the arctic air. I would be nice to see a few more morning of frost, especially since I average about 40 freezes a winter.

45/41 yesterday was nice to see the Portland area stay in the cool easterly flow all day heavy warm front drizzle the whole day too picked up just under half an inch of precip

Temp spiked to 52 this morning ahead of the cold front looking forward to some sunny days and chilly nights hopefully another inversion gets going too

I’ve only had 9 freezes this winter…all of them also associated with Arctic air. I only average about 25 a winter here.

We average probably 80-100 here, and I don’t know the exact number, but we are probably less than 20, the only year that was probably even close to this at this point was probably 2018-19.

We had 6 at this point last winter…still went on to have 20 total for the winter. Think our lowest over the last 15 years was 13 total freezes in 2015-2016…and our highest over the same timeframe is 45 in 2008-2009. Lots of years we end up getting a bunch in March.

That's one thing I never bothered counting because so many happen. Probably half the year in K-Falls.

The lows last Spring were crazy, my average low in March 2021 was that of an average January for lows.

Most people don’t keep track because many places average over 50 a year. Think my actual average is 22 or 23 a year so I do keep track of them.
