That’s some storm on the East coast….Wowzers!  suppose I got a date with TWC now.  Perhaps Phil will blow by on one of the live shots!!!

45/31 currently 32*.  Not a bad day despite the heavy fog early on. Got a nice shot as the fog was lifting

Did some scouting. Decided to make a reservation at pilgrim sands hotel in Plymouth. Right on the water.

Second bed in the room if anyone wants to join. My gf refuses go with me.

Had to get out to the coast for a few days with the nice weather.  Amazing leaving the inversion and seeing such blue skies.

Saw the biggest herd of elk I've seen in a long time, approximately 60 head, then watched them cross the Gray's River.  Stuck in construction traffic on the Astoria bridge and was able to photograph Mt. St. Helens with Adams on the left through the blurry inversion.  And caught sunset at Lincoln City, complete with a green flash on some of my pictures.

At this point I'm betting on a cold / dry February.  The pattern being advertised around Feb 1 is pretty legit cold and then it looks like a lot of N to NW flow type stuff with consistently N to NE surface pressure gradients.  Still betting on a more serious cold pattern setting up by mid month or so.

Meanwhile 45/29 here today with a current temp of 31.  Very different pattern than the first half of the winter.

I chose my geography with a purpose.  Also is where I suspect the outer deformation band will be.

It's really something to see how much cold air has built up over Central WA since this inversion began.  About 4 days ago Blewett Pass was in the 50s.  Tonight they are currently sitting at 14 degrees.  The amount / depth of the cold air has increased dramatically to say the least.

I suspect late February and early March will see troughing return in force will cool onshore flow and a decent mountain snow pattern. But the arctic air will be long gone by then with some mid-month +EPO torching cleansing most of the continent.

Even California was supposed to get in some much-needed precip with the pattern changed progged for early February. For some reason the models pulled a Lucy (as in Lucy pulling the football) on the pattern change!

The general theme of blockiness lends itself well to an eventual retrogression.  I think we'll be fine.  People seem to be glossing over a pretty legit cold trough that is slated for early next week.

You did have two very impressive rounds of precip down there so far this season.  Definitely a feast or famine type of winter.  Even up here we had mountain passes that were bare in early December followed by epic snowfall and now a couple of weeks with almost nothing.

However, due to the severe drought conditions statewide, we need more precip and snowfall in CA and hopefully another pattern like that of December develops before the end of this season.
