January 29, 2019 was the first of a 3-day stretch of highs in the mid-50's in Klamath Falls.

And you wouldn't believe what happened next! 🙀

For sure.  It will be talked about for decades to come! 😁

Now that wind switched offshore the water retreated and the snow is piling up quickly. Probably close to a foot has fallen in the last 5hrs.

Hotel still dark, frigid, and partially flooded. Currently sitting in my car with the heat cranking. Feels nice.

Visibility still very low with the winds and snow/blowing snow.

850s bottom out at -8 on the 18z GEFS with the upcoming trough.  That is solidly chilly.

I have a TON of videos to share. From water, to breaking glass, to roofs peeling off, to snow, sea spray, and cars moving in the parking lot. You will see them all soon.

I’m very sorry I stopped the live updates. Conditions went downhill fast last night, and by this AM I was helping the employees deal with shattering windows and water cascading into the halls. And calming down panicked guests.

My next chase will be inland for sure. This was stupid and dangerous. But fun at the same time. Lol.

Hopefully the hotel is able to upgrade their infrastructure a bit if they can afford to repair it. Most shingles nowadays are wind rated for 90mph at least.

That hotel is not new... it has been through many Nor'easters given its extremely vulnerable location.     And many more to come.

Still no D pic from Phony Phil huh? WEIRD.

Last night he posted a video of the snow at his hotel and mentioned someone specific on this forum (Chris), after Chris asked him to mention him in a video.  And Tim googled the hotel and it matched the videos that Phil posted.

So not phony this time

12Z ECMWF showed some well below normal days... particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday.    But even well below normal is not that cold once we get into February.

I think the roof was redone after a similar storm in 2015. I think they need a metal roof because there were almost as many asphalt shingles in the air as there were snowflakes.

These winds were no joke. Even on the protected side of the building I was having a hard time standing up straight. Definitely over hurricane force.

It’s hilarious. The glass started shattering and the employees were basically like “ugh, here we go again”while the guests were like “WTFFFF GET ME OUT OF HERE”.

But the surge washed out the road so we had to sit still, and ended up enjoying a bunch of free drinks together. Good times. Everyone is chill (literally..lol) now that the water has retreated. Now it’s the snow that’s the problem.

18Z GFS really pumps the ridge up along the west coast in the long range.  Inversion season will be waning by then so hopefully we can avoid the fog with that.

Typically the inversion season is Nov 20th through Jan 20th roughly. Glad the last few days we’ve gotten sun. Have had too much boring stagnant fog the second half of this month.

Looks like the models are hinting at a Siberian SSW event during week two.   The GFS shows it really blowing up in the 10 to 15 day period.  We shall see.

At least we are seeing some victories this month.  Just getting the Pacific shut off this month was a pretty big deal.  Incredible they haven't been colder than that in so long.

They hit 20 twice in November 2019, which is somewhat impressive. Late December was plagued by cloud over with the coldest airmasses. In our climate usually if it’s not one thing it’s another. Lol

Salem should end January about exactly normal. Give or take a tenth or two of a degree. On the 1991-2020 averages, still a couple degrees above the long term period of record average, but good for their "coldest" January since 2017 (About 5-6F warmer than that one.). A solidly below average February would still be able to beat out January for the 5th year in a row, it's certainly possible.

Let's hope, can't say this pattern has any redeemable qualities when we're socked in with fog/low clouds all day. It has burned off a few days here, though it still remains cool/hazy. It still hit 51F here earlier this month. Pretty meh after Jan 10th, but you start to see diurnal changes showing up again toward the end:
