Ok here’s my once a year post!

Reporting from White Salmon, WA. Always found the weather forecasting here to be really tough to pin down, as the NWS out of Portland tends to focus on Hood River and the western gorge, and the NWS out of Pendleton is always a blanket ‘East slopes of the cascades.’ I’m basically right across the Columbia River from Hood River, but higher up. I think I technically fall under the Pendleton office, but we’re right on the border of their forecasting areas. For just a quick example, we had no WWA or WSW leading up to this, and they only recently added a WWA for an additional 2” at 9am.

Id guess what makes the area tough to forecast is White Salmon essentially sits on top of a cliff side along the gorge. I’m at about 900’ but the elevation quickly increases the more towards Adams you go. Most model maps really struggle to show the difference between what’s going on along the river and what’s happening a quarter mile off of it up the hill.

I don’t have any temps or semi-official measurements to give you all so I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves. Been a wild 9 hours and doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon.

yay snow!

Excellent idea keeping the windshield wipers up.  Going to do that from now on when it snows.

Single digits still in Winthrop.  D**n that place is cold.  Only a small part of the country has a lower normal January average than them.

I looked out my window this morning and there is practically no snow left. Normally I'd be sad about this, but it's been such a great week that I find it hard to be disappointed about the snow disappearing.

You have never done that?  I do it for every snowfall.

Just never thought of it.  Yesterday I was thawing my truck out to jump start it and the wipers were still frozen to the windshield.  Seems like an obvious trick now!

Still a good snow cover here thanks to it not warming up like other places.  At least I got half of the picture right here.  I sure wish I could have pulled off snow last night though.

I always pull my windshield wipers off my windshield during snowstorms. Nothing worse than windshield wipers that are frozen to your windshield.

I like our chances.  The GOA ridge signal is very clear on the longer range models.  I think the brief crummy pattern is going to be transitory.  We still have a decent chilly trough slated for the 8th / 9th as well.

February is gonna be rockin’ (in the west).

Late January might get fun too. Close shave.

My elderly parents a couple miles from you are very happy.   My dad has missed a couple important doctor appointments in the last week and they are finally able to get out.    That is a relief for me.

That's a bummer, if it wasn't for the Covid risk I suppose I could have tried to help get them there, as I was off work most of the week.  I didn't have any issue motoring around in that little black car, even had to plow my way out of the neighborhood after the 6" last Thursday night.  It's always fun having snow come up over the hood! 😁  The snow tires/steel rims for that car was money well spent!

My wife and I went to the eye doctor last week, and she is a pretty nervous passenger...I told her any skid or slide is intentional unless it is accompanied by an "oh SH*T!"  She LOL'ed

When/if we have another of this, if they need groceries dropped off or a prescription picked up shoot me a message.

Great pics from White Salmon. Trout Lake would be a great place to live, they get incredible snows there. Speaking of snow, I'm grateful for this new cam so I can keep any eye on things in the Silverton Hills. Was starting to snow when I left for work this morning, but wasn't sticking yet, at that time we already had 1.75" of rain since midnight. SLE is up around 1.85" of rain on the day now too.

It is odd.  The ECMWF totally caved to the GFS at the end and ended up way overdoing the snow for most places.  Must have been the shallow cold layer that fooled the models.

Not to sound like Jim's echo, but that trough later this week is going to be pretty nippy. Ensemble mean is now down to -5.3C and I expect it may trend a little cooler.

One thing I noticed is that the surface winds yesterday were very erratic in the central Puget Sound. Winds would switch from calm, to gusty, and then back to calm again, and blew from pretty much every direction imaginable. It must have been a very complex situation that was difficult to model numerically.

Nice car!  😄  What year?  Is it a TDI?  6M or DSG?

I really wanted the grey but they were impossible to find when I was shopping.

Speaking of slushmageddon, looks like we received 7-8” of wet cement and 40-45mph gusts back home today. On nest cam I can see a large pine limb just missed my car. 😬

Yeah, the hills around North Bend really get a good amount. This winter has been great for the foothills in general so far, however. Even I'm up around 30" after last night for the winter.

I would give this  winter an A+ and I only got 14 inches. BRB gotta become rich and move to North Bend lol

You'd do better in Skykomish if you want snow. They have at least 50" on the ground right now. It's been a winter wonderland there since....idk beginning of December?
