Man... I think this winter/wet season is going to feel like an especially long one by the time spring rolls around. I keep forgetting its not February given the way the last few winters have gone. I also just realized that the ARs/flooding are almost two months in the rearview at this point. Not trying to ween though, this event has been sick even though I missed the first half of it. I hope we get even more. But I also hope the rain chills the f*** out until spring.

Pretty much everywhere has black ice expect downtown Bellevue and here on Mercer Island. Saw some spin outs after my last post. Sitting at 36 here. Saw a rain snow mix again as I was leaving Redmond about an hour ago.

I like your new term! I've experienced that before, especially in the Midwest on really cold nights.

Well a wet deck and 34.5 degrees. I must be the new swamp! This wind just continues which is not only killing any snow from reaching the ground but also killing the snow on the ground. I sure hope it’s a different story with the overrunning event tomorrow.

36.5* and lots of rain! I think there could be a bit of a mix at times, but I am not sure. Kids schools are 2 hours late again today, which was called last night. There is still a layer of icy snow hail on my back deck. Not as much as when I went to bed, but the rain hasn't washed it all away yet.

35 degrees here.  Definitely a mix outside. Very windy.  School is closed. Roads must not be looking good.

Schools closed here too.  No idea why.   Could have been 2 hours late.    If we continue to have challenging weather for the next couple months then things will change pretty quickly.  They will be forced to deal with it and stay open.   Can't keep closing schools for a rain/snow mix or frost or whatever other excuse they come up with.   They don't do that in eastern WA.   Or the rest of the northern US for that matter.

Windy here too... that kills snow accumulation in my area as well. Even when the upper levels are cold enough.

I remember a few years back... the Snoqualmie Valley School District started out closing any time the temperature was below 35 in the morning or there was a chance of a snowflake over the next week.     Then they used up all their days and I remember driving my kids to school in an actual blizzard one morning and parents were outraged that schools would be open in that weather.

Back when I was young (long time ago) we were in the Tahoma School District.  The drivers would chain up the buses and have at it.  Kids would have to walk out of their neighborhoods to the main roads to catch the bus.  Sometimes that would be a long walk but we didn't think twice about it.  Different times back then.  People are softer now for sure.

Its 37 degrees in North Bend this morning and schools are closed.     Can't keep that up.    That is the normal low in the winter.   😀

That’s about what I got as a result of multiple overnight snow showers.

Bonus was that the first snow shower was a snow thundershower. Only the second time in my life that I’ve observed thundersnow.

I took a few days off measuring snow. With the depth we have and the winds that were in the forecast a few days I took it inside. We're due to have a few inches tonight and also some going into Thursday am.

I also noticed that NWS Spokane added a new weather station near Clarkston that I haven't seen before. Good for that lower half of my zone area.

Garfield County/Pomeroy, WA:

2023-2024 Snowfall totals: 14.3 inches

HIghest snow total (per event): 5.8 inches total 1/11/24 - 1/12/24.

Most recent accumulation (non trace): 0.20 inches on 2/26/24

Days with  trace or more snowfall: 12/01/23 (0.60), 1/8/24 (1.0), 1/10/24 (3.5), 1/11/23 (3.5 inches with Thundersnow; separate event from prior day), 1/12/24 (2.30). 1/14/24 (T), 1/17/24 (1.20 inches), 1/18/24 (1.5 inches), 1/19/24 (0.20), 2/09/24 (0.30), 2/26/24 (0.20-mainly graupel)

First Freeze: 10/27/2023

Last Sub freezing Day: 1/20/24 (12th) (8 days in a row from 1/12/24-1/20/24)

Coldest low: -12F (!!!!!!!!) (1/12/24)

34 and raining here this morning, as modeled and expected the warmer air aloft is slowly working north. This round is over, and it will be at earliest the end of the month before we see more snow, which is fine.

Kind of humorous given the discussion about school here, that our local school was closed today, and it is just raining. Yesterday they were open, and ended up closing early once the snow accumulated.

Just absurd that we're getting another gross January.  Probably last week of the month will get better but the next 2 weeks look frightening .

Yeah, it makes me feel a little silly for thinking it wouldn't happen. At least we have had some goodies, and maybe at the surface we can pull off some "fake cold." But pattern wise it's as if the atmosphere knows what month it is.
