It's interesting because the summers of 2010-2012 are remembered as being very cool, when in reality they were fairly average in comparison to the historical averages. They had cool springs, and June was chilly each year, but if we look at JAS, really only July was cool, and at SLE only July 2011 was notably cool.

The shift actually happened in January 2013.

Hadley-Walker IR/G-ITCZ low pass was jolted by a massive subseasonal event (stemming from SSW) to a threshold crossing across frequencies. Basically a intra/interdecadal event along the lines of the great 1976 pacific climate shift, though expressed more thru warm pool/off-eq dynamics than well known ET EOFs like PDO.

Looked like a typical, albeit high amplitude intraseasonal cycle at the time. Little did we know…

Yeah we had a wet Dec 2012 and then Pacific shut down for California until Jan 2017.

If it was 60s and sunny I would also love it. But 50 degrees and dumping rain is gross.

I say August 2012 because that was the first month in which ridging became the default pattern mode. That month came in above normal. It continued into September of that year, then every summer month since...

Funnily enough I actually enjoyed it. June/July of that year were quite sad for watersports. 'Little did we know' indeed...

Well ridgy summer months happened in cool phases as well. And the same mechanisms responsible for inter/intradecadal cycles of warm summers can be present in cool cycles well, just less frequently.

I believe if we’re looking for lower frequency tendencies (rather than seasonal/subseasonal scale variability that happens all the time) then the transition on said scale occurred during the 2012/13 winter, centered in January.

Might start moving in that direction next week. GFS is saying 50 and sunny a week from now.

Then I think it will start to cool off leading into an Arctic outbreak by early February.

Sidenote -

Anyone have a scoop on Cheyenne WY?

Wife may have a job opp there and I work remote so it doesn't matter where I live as long as it's in Pacific or Mountain time zone.

Looks pretty arid, averages about 60" of snow a year and the record high of all time is 100, so 'cooler' than Spokane.  Record low is -39 so also 'colder' than Spokane.  I'd imagine some Chinook winter warmth like the CO front range and probably Blizzards too
