BTW....anyone who saw a pressure change from the shockwave should be on the lookout for another one or two.  With Krakatoa the shockwave circled the Earth several times.

Glad that Tyler caught that early this morning sharing his.   Mine plots every 15 minutes so not as dramatic but it’s there! Interesting your note that we may measure more waves!

Sorry to keep the volcano discussion going, but I went down a rabbit hole of watching the pressure wave progress around the world. The first graph is the plot of the barometer from my station. You can see the arrival of the wave at about 4:25 which was about 8 hours and 10 minutes after the initial explosion. My data is pretty noisy, but it seems the pressure continued to oscillate for about an hour and a half before settling down.

20220115_kagit_pressure_change.png.02db99b64d5d809716d171b17fcb01a8.png

This next graph is based on PWS readings from around the globe. I went to Weather Underground and estimated the starting time of the pressure wave from various locations west of the explosion using the various weather stations. These times are plotted versus their distance from the volcano. It's kind of cool to see how well they fit a linear line with the pressure wave traveling at about 310 m/s (~700 mph) which is just under the speed of sound.

Something that just crossed my mind, might make for some interesting discussion….

we are of course seeing the impact on the atmosphere…..what about under water….I’m thinking specifically about submarines out and about wandering the the Pacific, what they would have heard/felt and from how far away….

I don’t know if we have any retired submariners on the forum that could weigh in….

I dunno, I guess kind of an interesting mental exercise….

I doubt submariners would even notice it.

Actually, even normal surface ships at sea fail to notice tsunamis. They only become noticeable when they pile up against a shore. Ships will leave harbor and go out to sea in response to tsunami warnings.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Saw the same here, started coming in 30 minutes before and then intensified after sunset. Now it's very foggy, more than we've had in the past few days. Some high PM2.5 readings also kicked up the AQI to the 115s before coming back down, though it's back down to poor according to our sensor. Not quite sure what to make of it, though it still smells outside

Could be more eruptions in the coming weeks or years... of course that would be awful for the Tonga region.

Given that it was a phreatic (steam flash) eruption, water vapor proportions were higher than that of what you'd expect to see at Pinatubo. Ironically the phreatic nature of the eruption is probably what made it much more violent than if it were completely above surface. Probably not going to see much of a climate impact as is. I'd guess a VEI of ~4, but data is preliminary and the situation is developing. We'll see how much unrest remains at the Hunga Tonga volcano in the coming weeks.

The two winters following Krakatoa were amazing.  The best (by my measure) Feb and Dec on record for the NW in the year 1884.  The winter following Pinatubo sucked, probably due to a Nino more than anything, but 1992-93 was good.

No way a 4 would have caused the huge shockwave and tsunami that were seen.

We haven't had a day like today with widespread inversion this fall/winter. In fact, I don't even remember much past few seasons. We used to have more days like this. I personally really like it, it kept the area really cool. Fog is very thick right now after sunset.

No doubt.  The lack of inversions and fog this season have been notable.  That makes it all the more impressive that the first half of winter ended averaging pretty solidly below normal.  Looks like a few inversion opportunities coming up over the next couple of weeks.

Krakatoa produced the loudest sound ever heard on Earth... and a tsunami with 100+ foot waves.   Actually shattering ear drums of people miles away and washing entire villages off the map.

https://www.discovermagazine.com/environment/the-loudest-sound-ever-heard

Can't imagine that kind of catastrophe... this was very tame by comparison and still very impressive.

They would sure as hell heard it!!  And with that, I'm curious how far the sound carried, and how long did it echo around underwater degrading their acoustical sensors....I'm sure we've got a couple of subs up around the Kamchatka Peninsula, and down around the S. China Sea.....did the have a "dafuq???" moment when this thing uncorked?

I know water is not really compressible, but we are dealing with some unimaginable forces, so if a sub were to be transiting the area....sure they wouldn't feel the tsunami, I'm curious if there would have been a shock wave to move through the water column, how far would it have carried, and would they have felt it.

Also for those tracking the pressure waves... it comes from both directions.    We had the wave coming from the west early this morning but should get one coming from the east tonight and then another one from the west tomorrow evening.

In all, the pressure waves from Krakatoa circled the globe three to four times in each direction. (Each city felt up to seven pressure spikes because they experienced shock waves travelling in opposite directions from the volcano.) Meanwhile, tidal stations as far away as India, England, and San Francisco measured a rise in ocean waves simultaneous with this air pulse, an effect that had never been seen before. It was a sound that could no longer be heard but that continued moving around the world, a phenomenon that people nicknamed “the great air-wave.”

Sometimes you need to have a bit of a dark and twisted sense of humor to help get through some Shiitty dark days on this big round ball of rock called earth.

We’re very delicate lifeforms living on a massive unstable rock. Things will occasionally progress accordingly, despite horrific human outcomes. It’s a reminder that really, we’re not that special. Some people’s sense of humor and irony persist in spite of it, some people’s don’t. Neither are wrong, in my opinion.
