Still only 39 here.  At least it feels like January out there.  Amazing that even getting an inversion has been nearly impossible the last 4 years.

In my understanding there wasn't enough SO2 injection to actually qualify as VEI-5, even though the eruption itself spawned a big ash cloud and shockwave. Could be wrong though, all data is still early.

Hard to believe they would consider SO2 quantity in the VEI rating since it is an explosivity index.

That may be, I'm learning about all this stuff as it happens. If that is the case, then it still won't cause a volcanic winter, even if it gets a similar VEI rating to previous eruptions

On the subject of geologic disasters...Were you guys aware that in the past 3500 years there has never been such a long period without a major quake on the Seattle fault?  There have been 7 greater than 7 quakes on the fault in the last 3500 years, and the last one was 1100 years ago.  That means we are beyond overdue.  Of course the longer period means it will probably be stronger when it happens also.

Is the VEI index based on pressure changes?     I thought it was based on SO2 emissions, but I guess pressure waves are more of indication of the power of the eruption.

I've also seen it based on volume of material put out in an eruption.

This one probably wasn't big enough to have much effect.  It could cause some things to evolve differently than they would have otherwise though.

Very true.  That is going to take a while to figure out since the caldera is underwater.

Butterfly effect, it'll probably change some things. We won't be able to tell that it changed them though...

It's pretty hard to tell. From what I gathered from the cam, it def looks like it could be snowing. Honestly, if I didn't know better, I might say it's a little windy too.

80mph gusts up there now. 😬

The morons who built that resort didn’t think about how the wind attacks the summit. Can’t recall any “calm” weather there. Ever.

The West always gets it first. Both Fall and Winter.

Summer is the exception. Starts early here and ends late.
