Well, Krakatoa’s big blast was also a phreatic eruption. I’m not sure the amount of ejected material will be less w/ Tonga, though the amount of SO2 might be.

Krakatoa ejected more material than even Pinatubo, I believe. It was a massive eruption. Seems to be on an entirely different scale from this event.

Yeah from what I know even Pinatubo isn't comparable to Krakatoa. Krakatoa produced the loudest sound ever recorded (supposedly), and it was heard by individual places 5 times over. Just sheer power like I can't imagine.

I loathe soupy inversions.  Absolutely hate it.    Probably my least favorite weather.   I would glad take a week of rain over a week of being in the muck.   But also don't care at all about cold stats... I guess if that is your thing then inversions are great.

I'll take anything over that nasty pattern we were in last week.  Just incredibly sick of the rain.

Yeah they make some different types of solutions that are supposed to be friendlier to concrete but I think any ice melt product will take a toll if used too much. We dumped a lot on the sidewalks at the senior community I worked at, it really did do quite a bit of damage but we had no choice there…The residents did not change their daily habits no matter what the weather so we had to make it as safe as possible for them. Here at home I only use it on the gravel driveway. Plowing it helps a ton but there is always that small layer of compact snow and ice. Not a problem for our 4wd truck or our Subaru, but for deliveries, the babysitter, etc with non tractiony vehicles it’s a must. I keep it off of the concrete pad and just plow it. My suggestion is using a product like I bought that is supposed to be more pet and concrete friendly and remember that a little goes a long way!

Good point about a little bit going a long way!!  I might get a small container of something that is as "concrete friendly" as possible and also get some of the water softener salts that crf450ish mentioned.  Maybe I'll get some rock salt too as snowmizer mentioned.  With my new job, I'll be doing some sales travel, so I need to figure out something for my wife to be able to do if I am gone (she is not going to get out there and shovel LOL!)

The first year we lived here, I learned how bad it could get (really bad) so I've tried to stay on top of shoveling.  When we had snow on the ground for 2-3 weeks a few years ago, I got lucky that the timing of the snowfall worked out so I was able to keep the driveway mostly clear before my wife would leave/come home.  She drives a Honda Pilot 4wd, so it can usually get up it without too much excitement, and I can back my car up with the snow tires mounted (that's a little more exciting).  If I had to guess, my driveway has about a 25-30 degree slope on one side and 15-20 degree slope on the other.

This most recent event...I was just effing laaaazy!

The least windy day...
I've never recorded a day with an average wind speed of 0.0 mph until today. The "wind" briefly spiked up to 5 mph before noon, and nothing since.
Also, note the pressure graph, I've circled the 3 pressure waves from the volcanic eruption on Tonga, the latest coming this afternoon around 3:45.

I can't believe you have never had a totally calm day there.  I get several every winter where there is absolutely no wind.

Pretty interesting how the stronger ridging just to our NW in the short term ends up leading to a much better outcome a bit further down the road.  The 0z GEFS looks pretty promising so far.

Being so high and dry after Thursday it would appear we might have a shot at the second half of the month ending up below normal.  That would be something to see after the last several years.

Only December and the first week of January were good. November was total trash and the past few days have decimated the huge snow pack. But yeah last week of Dec/early Jan were amazing. Hit -30C twice.

Inversion pattern after the wet pattern? January outside of the first few days of the month is going to end up a snooze fest but maybe cooler than the last 4 years.

East Coast gets snow and they get a storm name. Same thing happens out west and it's a cancellation of Christmas by the media.

Flying home from CA tomorrow after a short two day trip so I won't complain about the weather in Spokane or the roads heading back to SE WA.
